Early Times Report
Jammu, Jan 16: Incessant rains in Jammu region and snowfall in upper reaches as well as Kashmir Valley since Saturday late night have virtually paralyzed the normal life here today.
Thin attendance was marked in private as well as government offices due to heavy downpour and cold. Furthermore, even thin attendance was marked in government and private schools with most of the city residents opting not to send their wards observing bad weather conditions. Migrant labourers were seen looking for shelters and trying to kill the chill by lighting firewood. Vendors were also not seen on the different city roads.
Heavy rains threw normal life out of gear in the entire state. While the only road link between Jammu and Kashmir remained closed because of heavy snowfall at Jawahar tunnel area, the poor visibility led to cancellation of all flights between Jammu and Srinagar.
People preferred to remain inside the houses while attendance in government offices was also thin because of severe cold. Some hilly areas of Kishtwar, Rajouri, Poonch, Ramban and Doda districts also experienced snowfall since last night. However, there was no report of loss of life or damage to property because of heavy rains and snowfall in the region.
In Jammu, the incessant rain paralyzed the normal life and disruption of power supply in several areas. Despite hectic efforts by the PDD, the bad weather hampered the restoration process and some areas remained into darkness till the last report reached in. The traffic was also halted on the national highway due to slippery road conditions. If rain and snow continued, it would be difficult to throw open the highway in next 24 hours.
As per the sources, due to closure of the national highway, several hundred passengers were forced to stay in Jammu as they could not proceed to their destinations. The situation here in the winter capital took worse turn with water logging across several rotaries in Jammu. Jammu Municipal Corporation took a severe hit as most of the vehicles passing through the Jewel Chowk area, Ambedkar Crossing, Dogra Crossing, Canal Road, Bikram Chowk were forced to wait for long time due to traffic snarls and water logging.
The road traffic was affected in interior areas of the Jammu region due to poor weather conditions and bad conditions of the road. Several vehicles were damaged as they were struck in open pits .Green belt area also saw traffic jams due to incessant rains.
