Govt failed to take cognizance of MET warning | Snow awakens Govt | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Jan 16: The fresh snowfall in the valley has yet again raised questions about efficiency of the government. It failed to take note of the meteorological department's warning that had predicted heavy snowfall from Saturday. Had the government awakened on time, the situation today would have been different. And when snow has again thrown life out of gear, the Chief Minister has asked the National Highway Authority and BEACONS to redouble their efforts in restoring Jammu-Srinagar National Highway for traffic to help pushing essential commodities and LPG to the Valley from Jammu on priority. The Rural Development Minister, who is stationed in Valley to oversee the situation and supply of essentials to the people, apprised the Chief Minister about the stocks and supply of essentials in the Valley and said that during his visit to various areas he has found availability of food grains satisfactory. However, he underlined the need for augmenting the LPG supply to the Valley to meet its increased demand that has arisen due to current cold spell and heavy snowfall. Sagar believes that there is adequate stock of essential commodities in the Valley. He may be right but can it reach the people in the present situation? There is no denying the fact that even police men were employed to clear the roads but it has been snowing since Saturday. Today very few people were seen moving on the roads in the summer capital as all the roads were blocked by heavy snowfall. What shall the hapless people do with the stocks dumped in government godowns? The Srinagar-Jammu highway forms the lifeline of the Valley. Nobody has ever contested it. Ts immediate clearance is important but more important are the lanes and the by lanes in various towns. Unless the same are cleared, any relief operation will draw flak. And for information of all, there is acute shortage of vegetables and other essentials including milk especially in the towns. The government digs a well when fire breaks out. The meteorological department had predicted heavy snowfall on Saturday. The government should have taken measures in advance to ensure proper supply of essentials during emergency. |
