Measures afoot to tackle fake currency menace | | | When eight people, including a woman, were arrested in Poonch on charge of circulating fake indian currency notes it was simply a tip of the iceberg. In fact India is under fake currency notes attack from Pakistan during the last 20 years. The spurt in the smuggling and circulation of fake Indian currency notes from Pakistan has been the result of a calculated move on the part of agencies across the border to destabilise Indian economy on one hand and lure boys to terrorist training camps on the other. Major portion of the fake Indian currency notes is being spent on funding various terrorist outfits and militants operating not only in Jammu and Kashmir but in other Indian states. Since a sizeable amount of the fake Indian currency notes has found place in the Indian banks and in the Indian business transactions fears about destabilising the country's economy have started rising. Not only this militants and those boys ,who are under arms training within the camps in some parts of the country, have been using fake Indian currency notes for building overground network. The National Investigative Agency (NIA) has carried out a survey on identifying the source fromwhere the bundles of fake Indian currency notes have been flooding the Indian markets. And on the advice of the NIA a committee was constituted to examine the issue. The Committee, comprising experts from security, printing and minting, examined in detail the fake Indian currency notes and compared them with the currency notes printed in the official mint in Pakistan. The Committee came to the conclusion that the fake Indian currency notes were being printed in the same official mint in Pakistan. And the agencies responsible for funding militants, operating in various Indian states, including Jammu and Kashmir, with the fake Indian currency notes have been instructed to ensure that the bundles of these fake Indian currency notes were not mixed with the genuine Pakistani currency notes. In certain cases the agents have been seen mixing genuine Indian currency notes with the bundles of fake currency notes to avoid immediate detection. The menace of circulation of fake Indian currency notes in the Indian markets and banks is said to have assumed serious dimensions prompting the centre and the State Governments to direct the security forces and the intelligence agencies to coordinate their efforts for waging a decisive battle against those involved in smuggling and circulation of fake Indian currency notes. The result of new strategy was the seizure of fake Indian currency notes worth Rs.6 crores from the union capital recently. Detailed investigation by various security and intelligence agencies, besides the Delhi police, has revealed that fake Indian currency notes printed in Pakistan were being smuggled into I ndia from across Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Punjab and Rajasthan.Part of the consignment of fake Indian currency notes is being smuggled into India from across the LOC and the IB in Jammu and Kashmir. It is in this context that the centre has decided to strengthen measures needed for checking currency notes smuggling, detection of these fake Indian currency notes and seizure of the wads of these fake notes. The Govrnment is contemplating other measures, including heavy rewards to the informers, for tackling the menace which if left unchecked could pose a serious threat to the country's economy and security.
