Panthers raised statehood slogans in Udhampur | Trifurcation of J&K | | Neha
JAMMU, Jan 17: Day before yesterday, Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party (JKNPP) organized a convention of party workers in Udhampur to discuss what should be done to mobilize public opinion in favour of its demand seeking reorganization of the state and force the authorities to set-in-motion a process leading up to the establishment of a separate assembly for Jammu province invested with the necessary legislative powers. Hundreds of Panthers drawn from different parts of the province took part in the convention weathering all odds, including the vagaries of the nature, including heavy rain and extreme cold wave. Nothing deterred them. Before that they organized a very long march. A number of Panthers addressed the convention and spoke on the plight of the people of Jammu province. They attacked the successive governments in the state for their negative attitude towards the people of Jammu province and said in one voice that there was no other alternative but to break their political ties with Kashmir and have a dispensation that is theirs' own. "Separate dispensation is the only solution to the Jammu problem," everyone who spoke during the day-long convention opined. There was nothing new in what they said. For, what they said was what they had been saying since January 2011, when the JKNPP adopted Agenda 2011. The Agenda 2011 had promised a separate chief minister and separate assembly for Jammu province. It had demanded reorganization of the state on a regional basis. The Panthers Agenda 2012 also provides for the same. In fact, it is carbon-copy the Agenda 2011. However, what was absolutely new that was witnessed in the Udhampur convention was the loud clamour for statehood for Jammu province. The speakers did not use the word trifurcation, but it became quite evident from the speeches most of the Panthers made that they were for complete separation from Kashmir and for a full-fledged separate Jammu State. They used the word reorganization overlooking the fact that only a full-fledged enjoys the power to legislate. Even for more significant was the speech of the Panthers' chairman in the sense that he also demanded the status of statehood for Jammu province. He was so overwhelmed by the protagonists of the state's trifurcation. This was something very significant because it indicated that the radicals among the Panthers were thinking in terms of obtaining for Jammu province the status of statehood. All the well-wishers of Jammu province and those who believe in the principle of justice and equity would at once vouch for what the radicals among the Panthers suggested as a rational and final solution to the problems the people of this province have been facing since October 1947. Trifurcation of the state into Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh states is the only viable and most acceptable solution to the people of Jammu province, barring the Jammu-based Kashmiri agents and the so-called mainstream parties like the Congress, the BJP, the CPI, the CPI-M and so on. The people of Kashmir have their own agenda which doesn't suit the people Jammu province and Ladakh. The people of these two regions, who have suffered immensely during all these more than 64 years of the state's accession to India at the hands of the Kashmiri leadership and New Delhi, are religiously committed to obtaining a dispensation for themselves that is within India and under the Indian Constitution. Why because their aspirations, needs and compulsions are different from those of the Kashmiri leadership. Hold a referendum in Jammu province to find what exactly the people of Jammu province want and you would find an overwhelming majority of them favouring separation from Kashmir and for the status of statehood for Jammu. The Kashmiri leadership, New Delhi and even the so-called Kashmir experts know it, but they would not acknowledge this fact publicly. Most of them give the nation to understand that separation of Jammu and Ladakh from Kashmir would help Pakistan grab Kashmir. A spurious argument. As for the Kashmiri leadership, it opposes the demand for separation on the ground that such a step would "hurt the Kashmiri psyche". It also terms the demand as "communal" and "anti-national". But can understand why they are opposed to the idea of the state's trifurcation. They opposed it because it would deprive them of their power to rule over and exploit Jammu and Ladakh. Let them oppose; their opposition is as politically motivated as it is meaningless. Now that the radical Panthers have come out openly in support of the state's trifurcation, it is time for the neglected people of Jammu province to support them. This is a must. As for the Panthers, they need to intensify their activities across the province. The people of Jammu province would surely rally around them provided they prove by their words, deeds and activities that they are really committed to what they said in Udhampur. |
