Jammu, Jan 17: Is Jammu market "flooded" with fake Currency notes worth lakhs?
Answer is simply Yes, if one goes by complaints of numerous people here in the winter capital.
It is worthwhile to mention here that, the startling revelation pertaining to circulation of counterfeit currency notes, came to fore on Monday through Government of India's report, which states that there has been a 400 % increase in such counterfeit transactions in Indian's financial channels.
furthermore, the report that has been compiled by the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) under the Union Finance Ministry, states that during 2010-11 financial year (till March 2011), the agency detected "4,23,539 incidents of Fake Indian Currency Notes (FICN) with a face value of over Rs 35 crore."
As fake currency continues to be pumped illegally in different parts of the country, the Jammu and Kashmir state too seems to be becoming a part of circulation of fake currency notes by anti-national elements.
"Amazingly", highly placed sources disclosed to ET, "the fake currency notes have also been detected from the amount withdrawn from various banks. Besides state and nationalized banks, the detection of fake currency notes has been surfaced in different branches of private banks."
"But whenever any such complaint has been brought before any of concerned Branch head, the same has been turned down with brief statement that the said fake currency note has not been withdrawn from the said branch. People are being taken to task with counter question why they don't check before leaving the cash counter," sources said and further pointed out, "how can a common man check each and every currency note and also when the same notes are being withdrawn from the bank branches where responsible officials are on chair to serve the people positively."
"I had purchased a new car and to get some more accessory fitted in my new vehicles, I visited to the bank branch on Friday and withdrew cash of 20,000 from my account. To my utter shock, when I paid the amount to the shopkeeper, he returned me the two currency notes of 500 saying the same are fake," said a government employee while speaking to ET on the condition of anonymity. He further shared that "when I visited the bank branch and asked to replace the said notes, person on the counter refuse to entertain. Instead of inquiring the issue, the official asked me that it was my fault that why I did not check when I collected the cash."
"If customers will have to face such queries with no fault at their side, then how one can faith the bank officials who owe a responsibility of detecting such activities," he lamented.
