Confusion, black marketing and hoarding rules Valley | | | Early Times Report
srinagar, Jan 17: Three days of continued blockade of Jammu-Srinagar road and cancellation of flights to Srinagar airport due to non-clearance by the ATC has exposed the State government's myth of sufficient stocks of essential supplies maintained in the Valley. Worried over the non-availability of LPG, the State Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has blamed the oil companies for not maintaining enough stocks of LPG in the Valley and this happened when Omar's minister in charge CAPD had asserted there were sufficient stocks of LPG in the Valley. The position of other essential supplies is no less worrying. LPG is being sold openly in the black market at Rs.750 to Rs 900 in the Valley by dealers who had hoarded the cylinders for making money by exploiting the miseries of the local people. Mutton, chicken, eggs, pulses and other essential items are also being openly sold in the black market as a helpless administration watches the situation. Snowfall like the one witnessed by the Valley during the last three days is nothing unusual. Valley has seen much heavier and longer periods of snowfall in the past. The State government cannot blame the weather as the weather office had given advance notice about the recent snowfall. The Jammu-Srinagar road which has been closed for the last three days has also added to the problems of stranded passengers some of whom were miraculously saved by the border roads organization personnel after they were caught in an avalanche in the Bannihal sector of the road. Even before the highway got closed, total chaos and confusion ruled the highway. While the BRO officials said the road would remain open one way, the mismanagement of the traffic department resulted in massive congestions on the road. The officials of the CAPD have been claiming that special market checking squads have been formed in Srinagar and other towns of the Valley to keep the prices under control, but despite this claim black marketing, hoarding of essential commodities and profiteering in these is continuing unchecked in every city and town of the Valley. The ministers and MLAs representing the various assembly constituencies have been conspicuous by their absence during the recent snowfall. People who elected these representatives are regretting their decision. When the ministers and MLAs were needed in their constituencies, they chose safely to bask in the comfortable weather in winter capital. Now that the weather has improved in the Valley, ministers and MLAs will rush to Srinagar and other places to issue press statements that they are holding meetings and advising officials to serve the people during the harsh winter months. It is unfortunate that the ministers and MLAs have taken the people of the Valley for granted. How much anger and mistrust the people have against these ministers and MLAs would only become clear to them when they start seeking votes during the next elections. The problem with power is that nobody tells you the truth until your ship sinks. Given the reputation and the credibility of the ministers and the MLAs, their boats are already filled with water. It is only a matter of time when these will go down. |
