| Folk fest for amateurs beginsFolk fest for amateurs begins | | | JAMMU | JAN 15 A Three-day folk festival for amateur artistes started at Abhinav Theatre here today, which was inaugurated by Minister for Roads and Buildings, Gulchain Singh Charak. The folk festival is being jointly organized by Sangeet Natak Academy and J&K Academy of Art Culture and Languages (JKAACL). On the occasion, welcome address was given by Secretary JKAACL, Dr. Rafeeq Masoodi while Ved Kumari Ghai gave the keynote address. On the opening day of the festival, folk performances on “Jagrana” was given by various groups of folk artists whereas paper presentation was given by Sham Lal Raina. While speaking on the occasion Raina said that Jagrana was in vogue in the bygone days when women folk was not permitted to join the barat. The women used to celebrate at home by singing and dancing. While speaking on the occasion the chief guest – Charak appreciated the step taken by the Academy and said that it is need of the hour to revive the Dogra culture which is loosing its charm among the younger generation. The performers included Preeto Devi and Party from Blok Marh, VD Shreshta and Party from Chenani, Durgi Devi and Party from Miran Sahib, Naro Devi and Party from RS Pura as well as Suman and Party from Block Dansal. The festival that will conclude on January 17 will have on display folk performances including Haran, Bhagtan, Jattar and Chinj.
