Life of players risked, Sports Council confused
1/18/2012 12:14:13 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Jan 17: The closure of the MA Stadium in view of Republic Day function has led to chaos as the `confused’ State Sports Council has brought as many as seven disciplines together at single ground of Green Field, Gandhi Nagar here thereby risking the life of young trainees.
Bringing together the coaching centers of cricket, athletics, kabaddi, kho-kho , volleyball, football and korfball indicates at confused state of mind of those at the helm of affairs in the highest sports body in the state.
Finding it hard to accommodate and train the young players, coaches preferred either to stay away or deliberately reduced the number of trainees so as to avoid any untoward incident.
On a visit to the Green Field ground, this correspondent found that as many as seven games were being practiced at the small venue. While five of them were official coaching centers, two others were being run as recreation.
On being contacted, Sports Officer Jammu, Rajan Sharma said, “Out of five coaching centers, three (athletics, cricket and kabaddi) have been shifted to Green Field ground from MA Stadium while fencing has been accommodated at fencing hall and wrestling center is presently non-functional,”
He further said that at two other games of volleyball and football are not coaching centers but recreational or entertainment facility at Green Field.
On being enquired from coaches, it was found that the number of cricket trainees has been reduced to just 15 as against strength of 45 boys because of paucity of space. On the other hand, there was no athlete present at the Green Field resulting into the only coach kept himself busy playing volleyball.
However, half of the ground was occupied by young under-14 boys’ football, who were undergoing selection trials in football, virtually pushing the Korfball trainees to a corner.

INBOX
JU enmity causes Council dearly

The hostile relations with the University of Jammu over exchange of sports facilities, has caused the State Sports Council dearly. Earlier, during the month-long seizure of the MA Stadium and GGM Science College grounds by the security agencies for Republic Day function, Sports Council used to shift most of its effected coaching centers to University grounds.
But, this time, the unfriendly behaviour of the present incharge Secretary State Sports Council, Kiran Wattal irked the JU authorities, who refused to accommodate Sports Council in any manner.
Furthermore, the poor planning ahead of seizer of the MA Stadium by security agencies, led to poor presence of trainees at different coaching centers in and around the sports hub of the Winter Capital.
