Highway open for one-way traffic, but where are the supplies? | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Jan 18: As if they follow a written script, ministers have started arriving in the Valley exactly coinciding with the improvement in the weather. This does not prove any heartburning concern for the welfare of the people who still continue to suffer for LPG, sugar, kerosene oil and other essential commodities of life. Ministers are proving they are arriving here as fair weather friends of the people. It is like extending an umbrella over the head of a person in sunshine and withdrawing it at the first signs of rain. Typical of their style of functioning, the ministers have issued statements here that there is no shortage of essential commodities in the Valley. People must be entertaining themselves in long queues waiting for their turn of the LPG cylinder in sub-zero temperatures! It is complete lack of coordination on part of the State government, its various ministers and officials. In the Valley the minister in charge of CAPD says the news about an acute shortage of LPG, kerosene oil and sugar is 'just a rumour' and that there are enough stocks available everywhere. In winter capital Jammu the state government issues statement that the group of ministers at the central level will review the position of LPG in the Valley by various oil companies and also look into the failure of the oil companies to maintain sufficient stocks of LPG in the Valley. It has also been said that given the experience with the existing oil companies the State government will explore the possibility of tying up with other oil companies to ensure that such a situation does not recur. Isn't it a typical case of the right hand not knowing what the left hand is doing? The State Chief Minister Omar Abdullah takes a review of the situation through a video conference where everybody present assures him that all is well in the Valley. It is strange that senior officials and even his own ministers should advise complacency during a crisis situation. This does not help the credibility of the State government; it only brings it further down. People outside the State might believe that there is no shortage of essentials of life in the Valley, but telling this to the people living in the Valley becomes a cruel joke. The Jammu-Srinagar road has now been opened for the last two days for one way traffic, but neither has the supply position of essentials improved nor have the stranded passengers been allowed to reach their destination. What is actually happening on the highway needs to be made public. If the road is open for just the supply trucks carrying LPG etc to the Valley then why are the essentials of life still in acute shortage here?
