Gen Singh being humiliated, A dangerous move
Lowering Soldier's Morale

JAMMU, Jan 18: Chief of Army Staff General V K Singh is a finest soldier. His contribution to the Indian State has been immense. He is not just a great general; he is a great leader as well. He has always inspired soldiers and provided skillful and effective leadership to them. The result has been that the enemies of India in the Kashmir Valley are on their run. He is the one who told Chief Minister Omar Abdullah candidly that his demand for the revocation of AFSPA could not be conceded because it was fraught with dangerous ramifications. It was again he who hit the nail on the head by questioning the ideology of those in Kashmir and elsewhere who had been demanding revocation of AFSPA.
General Singh is also considered very honest. It was he who initiated action against the corrupt in the Army and did his best to cleanse it of those who had brought bad name to the institution of Army. That he is a man of integrity and he could put at stake his office could be seen from the fact that he told the Government of India a number of times that he would quit the office if it so desired provided his original date of birth as mentioned in the high school certificate is accepted and that not to accept his original date of birth would not only tarnish his own image but the image of the very institution of Army.
The General put in all efforts to carry conviction with the Government of India, but with no result. The Defence Minister, the Defence Secretary, Attorney General of India and who not did not think it prudent to consider his plea. Convinced that the Congress-led government at the centre is out to humiliate him and undermine the institution of Army, General Singh on Monday approached the Supreme Court of India to seek justice. It happened for the first time in the history of India that a soldier of the rank of Chief of Army Staff went to the court to save his dignity and honour.
It was hoped that the Congress-led government would step in to resolve the age controversy in the larger national interest. But it did not happen. Instead, the Defence Minister, headed by A K Antony, filed a caveat in the Supreme Court and urged the apex court not to give any judgment without hearing the government's stand on the issue. In other words, the Congress government has decided to confront the Army Chief not realizing the dangerous fall-out its approach would have on the morale of the Army. It will not only lower the morale of the Army, which fought splendidly against the enemies under the leadership of General Singh, but would also embolden those who have all along tried to weaken the institution of Army for achieving ulterior motives.
There is still time at the disposal of the Congress government to rectify its mistake and restore the dignity of the General and through him the dignity of the Army. But it appears that the Congress of Sonia Gandhi and the government of Manmohan Singh are unlikely to do the needful. Why certain elements in the political establishment are working overtime to see General Singh out of the South Block on May 31, 2012? This is the question being put by many concerned Indians, including very many ex-generals. Some of them have even asserted that the motives of those who want General Singh to leave the office latest by May 31 this year are not pious. In fact, they have leveled very serious charges against the concerned authorities without naming them. If their allegations are correct, then it can be said that an insidious influence is at work to weaken the institution of Army, something the Indian nation, which is already passing through very critical times, cannot afford. The situation is indeed dangerous.
General Singh is fighting for dignity and honour. The government must not undermine it by raising doubts about his date of birth and dragging a simple case into the public gaze just because there are certain vested interests who want to bring the high office of the Army Chief to an absurd level. It is the fundamental duty of the custodians of the Indian State to respect the Army for the splendid contribution it makes to the nation.
