Traffic mismanagement on NH main cause of problem in Chenab region
8 Fresh snowfall creates chaos among local inhabitants

Kishtwar, Jan 18 : Fresh snowfall in many parts of the Chenab region creates chaos among the general public as the shortage of essential commodities continuous to hit Doda and Kishtwar District due to continuous blockade of Jammu-Kishtwar National Highway since Jan 6, 2012 when like in other parts of the state heavy snowfall was witnessed in Chenab region.
The local inhabitants and businessman claims that the traffic mismanagement on National Highway is the main cause problem for smooth transportation of essential goods like vegetables, Kiryana items, milk, LPG, Kerosene Oil, Petrol and medicines.
"We have been told by the traffic authorities that after clearing the stranded vehicles of LPG and petroleum for Srinagar, the vehicles of Chenab region loaded with essential commodities will be allowed to move and despite 3 days time by than no stranded vehicles on way to Doda and Kishtwar were cleared so far." Said Babu Ram, a vegetable whole seller from Kishtwar. Babu Ram said that there is acute shortage of vegetables and other daily use goods in the market. He said that at least 20 vehicles loaded with vegetables and fruit on way to Chenab region are stranded on Jammu-Kishtwar National High form more than one week. He said that due to continuous delay in arrival of the stranded vehicles, he had suffered the losses to the tune of Rs. 2 lacs. He said that Kishtwar-Jammu National Highway is in better condition for movement of traffic as compared to Jammu-Srinagar and said that the mismanagement on part of the traffic authorities is the main cause of problem as far as shortage of essential commodities in Chenab region is concerned. He said that traffic authorities each time creates confusion and instead of allowing the vehicles of Chenab region to move forward, they treated the same at par with decision taking into the consideration on account of planning keeping in view of Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, which has no concern with that of Kishtwar-Jammu National Highway.
Another businessman Abdul Rashid who runs a Chicken shop at Bus Stand Kishtwar said that due to continuous blockade of National Highway, there is shortage of Chicken and mutton in the main market. "I purchase 200 pieces of live chicken @Rs.110/Kg from Doda in which during transportation 20 died, otherwise under normal circumstances the rate is 80/Kg." Said Abdul Rashid who witnessed heavy rush of customers outside his shop. Mr. Abdul Rashid said that despite paying Rs.30/Kg more than the normal rates in addition to the transportation charges, he was selling the Chicken mutton on same price as he use to sell before.
Khurshid Ahmed who was waiting for his turn outside the Chicken shop of Abdul Rashid said that neither chicken nor mutton is available anywhere in the market. "While passing by, I noticed people gathering outside the Chicken shop and after inquiry I found that the shopkeeper is selling the chickens and I too decided to buy the same." Said Khurshid Ahmed. He said that people are facing lot of problems since large number of essential commodities off daily use has vanished from the main market.
The owner of the famous Nizam Din Hotel in Kishtwar said that due to non availability of the mutton in the market, the hotel business was hit badly. "I have opened my hotel after 3 days and somehow manage 5 Kg mutton today which is far less than our daily requirement." Said the owner of Nizam Din hotel. He said that in case the authorities fail to restore traffic on Kishtwar-Jammu National Highway, the business community of Doda and Kishtwar District will suffer badly.
Sunil Kumar Manager Jagdamba Gas Agency Kishtwar (LPG dealer) , an outlet of Indian Oil Corporation said that due to continuous blockade of Kishtwar-Jammu, two vehicles loaded with more than 500 LPG cylinders are stranded on National Highway. "WE will send the demand for more supply of LPG once our two stranded vehicles laden with LPG Cylinders will reach at Kishtwar." Said Sunil Kumar. He said that 4 days ago only two vehicles were manage to reach Kishtwar with 538 LPG Cylinders on board and said that same were distributed among the people with the help of local police as they apprehended the law and order problem. He said that once the two stranded LPG laden vehicles will reach Kishtwar, they will distribute the same among the masses. He said that after accessing the situation and requirement, the agency will make his request for supply of the same.
The people of Kishtwar feel lot of problem in term of non availability of flour in the market as well as in government store. When contacted Firdous Ahmed Kandoo, storekeeper CAPD Kishtwar said that there is no shortage of rice and sugar in Kishtwar District and said that same is available in large quantity in FCI godown Kishtwar. He said that due to non availability of road, more than 20 vehicles loaded with flour were stranded on Kishtwar-Jammu National Highway since last several days. He said that once the National Highway gets clear for vehicular movement, the shortage will be overcomes.
Meanwhile several students from Kishtwar who comes to their homes during winter break find difficulty to reach Jammu as well as to Srinagar attend their classes. "I have suffered a loss in my education, since I have to attend the ITI training classes at Jammu, but due to non availability of transportation I wasn't able to reach Jammu to attend my classes." Said Zubair Malik a student of B-Tech from Kishtwar studied in Awantipora College Srinagar. Zubair said that he along with his friend is regularly confirming about the availability of the transportation to Jammu from Bus stand, but he was disappointed till now. He said that after attending the training classes at Jammu, he had to go to Srinagar to join his college. He said that his first target is to reach Jammu and said that from Jammu there are so many options to reach Srinagar including to catch any flight to avoid further losses in studies.
