PDP activists' march to civil secretariat foiled | Stranded passengers demand airlifting to Valley | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Jan 20: A protest march by hundreds of stranded passengers led by the activists of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the Civil Secretariat was today foiled by the police in this winter capital of the state. Amid anti-government slogans, the stranded passengers led by the PDP leaders this morning marched towards the Civil Secretariat complex demanding airlifting services for the passengers struck up in the winter capital as the national highway remained closed for the fourth day today. The stranded passengers marched towards the Secretariat complex, where section 144 of CrPC has already been imposed due to security reasons but heavy deployment of police and para-military troops restricted their march. The protestors also entered into clash with the police but they dispersed later shouting slogans against the government and mismanagement by the civil administration in arranging food and shelter for the stranded passengers at General bus stand. Stranded here for the past one week, Kashmir-bound passengers today held demonstrations demanding that they be airlifted back to the Valley. The passengers held demonstrations at Jammu Bus stand here where they are camping for over one week due to closure of the Jammu-Srinagar national highway, the only surface link to Kashmir Valley. "Me, along with my family and others are battling for our survival due to extreme cold conditions and shortage of money. Government should facilitate airlifting to Kashmir Valley," Bashir Ahmed, a resident of Kulgam, told reporters here. Like him, most of the passengers alleged that they were running short on money and the government facilities of boarding, lodging and food "were not enough". Over 2000 Kashmir-bound people, including women, children and the elderly, are spending days and nights at Jammu Bus Stand and Amarnath Yatri Niwas here for the last one week. Meanwhile Jammu-Srinagar National Highway remained closed for the fourth consecutive day for passenger vehicles as the tankers and truckers carrying essential commodities were allowed to proceed towards the Valley yesterday. The highway is still closed due to heavy snowfall in the past two days. The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) men are on job and near about 1,000 vehicles are still stranded on the highway, a police spokesman told. |
