Early Times Report

Jammu, Jan 21: Has Congress as major alliance partner of coalition government in J&K started distancing apart from National Conference once again…? Are the strings of ties under strain again between the allies ….the leaders of which would swear by the slogan of coalition dharma or is Congress getting disenchanted and disillusioned with NC which continues to be in the steering seat of power. If the statement of a senior Congress leader against NC and no less dignitary than the Patron of the party Dr Farooq Abdullah is weighed in political terms, it indicates so and perhaps more if one is able to decipher between the lines.
Ashok Bhan, a Supreme Court lawyer Advocate and senior Congress leader made a statement the other day that has raised many a eyebrows not only within NC but also in political corridors of the state for more than one reason. In what can be seen as a bold statement which requires mustering of courage Bhan held National Conference patron, Dr Farooq Abdullah responsible for mass exodus of Kashmir Pandits from the Valley 22 years back. Bhan also said Farooq's resignation in 1990 allowed the space for militants armed by ISI and Jihadis. "The terrorists followed the strategy of killing one to scare a thousand", he said.
That he leveled these accusations against NC's top brass while addressing a gathering Pandits sitting on dharna at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on Friday , in capacity of a leader and representative of the community is well understood as the occasion was continuation of some programmes organized by Pandit organizations in connection with observance of Holocaust Day. But a bigger fact remains that Ashok Bhan is primarily associated with Congress which is the major alliance partner of NC in J&K coalition government. Though this is no new accusation as some KP organizations and political parties have time and again been saying so while analyzing the circumstances and situation that prevailed at that point of time when the KPs were pushed out of their homes in somewhat 'organised and orchestrated' manner. What makes it sound astonishing is it coming from Congress , as ally of NC which may stir the stagnant political waters of coalition. In the politically typical way of stirring the hornets nest, Bhan, while speaking before the KP audience 'reclaled how Dr.Farooq Abdullah created a political vacum in 1989-1990 by resigning his Government'. This, according the Congress leader, 'allowed the space for terror elements armed by ISI and Jihadis from Pakistan to operate and terrorists executed the strategy of Killing one and scaring a thousand of Kahmiri Pandits'. In what can be seen as taking on NC high command , Bhan has also said that the community demands an answer from Abdullahs. Not only this, Bhan has also accused the present state government of failure to pave way for return of pundits to the Valley. He contended Kashmir ethos would always be incomplete without pundits and demanded a high level probe to fix responsibility for what he called ethnic cleansing of the pandits.
