People continue to face shortage of essential items

srinagar, Jan 21: With National Highway remaining closed for last 14 days after heavy snow fall in Kashmir valley and upper reaches of Jammu region the entire Kashmir is facing scarcity of essential commodities especially the LPG and Kerosene Oil.
The scarcity of essential commodities has led to price rise and the black-marketing of essential commodities in Valley. The hoarders and black-marketers have a field day as they were charging the prices two times more that original rate even in the Summer capital.
Though the authorities are fully aware of the situation, they have failed to take action against the hoarders and black-marketers. There is a lot of resentment among the people against the scarcity of essential commodities in Kashmir.
The higher reaches of Valley like Gund Kangan, Ganiwan, Sonamarg, Shopian, Aharbal, Pahalgam, Yusmarg, Gulmarg, Gurez and Keran are under five to eight feet snow fall and people in these areas are facing shortage of essential commodities totally said , Mir Ghulam Rasool president Peoples Welfare Forum.
He said the shopkeepers are selling the commodities at their own rate as there is not control of the administration on the market alleged Mir. He said that mutton is not sold as per the government rate and at some places it is being sold Rs 270 a kg. Same is case with fruits and vegetables, he added.
He said when some consumers protested in Summer Capital recently against the higher prices of vegetables and fruit, the shopkeepers said that they are helpless as there is total scarcity of food items in Valley due to road blockade and the stockists have increased the rate.
The ministers have left the Valley for Winter Capital leaving the people in lurch. Various areas are facing power and water crisis and the administration are unmoved, said Mohammed Ramzan a social activist from Kangan, Ganderbal.
He said on one hand the cold wave has intensified with night temperature plummeting below minus zero degree and the taps and water bodies totally freezing in Valley the people in many parts of Kashmir are facing acute water scarcity.
``We can't use electric gadgets like heaters blowers etc to beat the intensive cold inside the house as maximum areas are still without power'' said Ramzan. He said the bus service in various remotest areas have not been restored due to heavy snow fall and many areas remained cut off from rest of Valley as authorities failed to clean the snow from them for four -five days, he added.
The administration is nothing worth name in Kashmir, he said as it has failed to respond the peoples problems and issues by maintaining the supply, he said.
