Finally PDP's pressure forces coalition regime to air lift stranded passenger | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Jan 21: It seems succumbing to the political pressure maintained by the main opposition party the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the state government today airlifted about 300 passengers to Srinagar from Jammu technical Airport in the special aircraft of Indian Air Force. It was just yesterday when the PDP leaders including MLAs namely Abdul Rehman Veeri, MLA, Basharat Bukhari, MLA, Mohammad Dilawar Mir and Thakur Balbir Singh (both general secretaries of PDP) along with Avtar Singh Khalsa and Ashok Jogi led a protest march of stranded passengers towards Civil Secretariat Jammu. Though the "march towards Civil Secretariat' was foiled by the heavy contingent of police yet it has sent its powerful message to the state government which infact seemed in no mood to give any chance to PDP to gain a score so managed airlifting of stranded passengers instantly. The stranded passengers are thankful to the PDP leadership for not only organizing the community kitchen (langer) for them but also taking their cause to higher level by participating in their protest which woke up the state government from its slumber. "If it were not PDP that came to lead us yesterday, the NC led government may have never paid heed to us. Sensing the political loss in valley, the NC led coalition immediately offered Airlift which was demanded by us for the last few days, said Arif Mohammed one among the stranded passengers at General Buss Stand. It is to mention the state government has attracted a strong criticism for its alleged negligence towards the provision of essential commodities as well as relief to the people affected by hostile weather conditions in the state after North India went under the grip of the severe cold wave. The political parties PDP, BJP and JKNPP have taken the government to the task, alleging people are suffering due to the negligence of the government and its agencies. The political parties alleged that high profile visit of ministers to the snow affected areas are only 'show off tours' while the relief work remained only in papers and nothing is being made available on ground. Meanwhile officiating defence spokesperson in Jammu said state administration has arranged IAF aircraft to airlift the stranded passengers in Jammu and two sorties have left for Valley with 300 passengers in the morning. He said in the first sortie of AN-32, 50 passengers were airlifted and in the second sortie of IL-76, 250 passengers were airlifted to the Valley. "The sorties also airlifted 250 army personnel to Jammu, who were stranded in Srinagar," he added. The Jammu-Srinagar National Highway remained closed for the third consecutive day, police spokesman said. |
