Bhim does deserve appreciation for his interventions | In Defence of Gen Singh | | Neha JAMMU, Jan 22: Chairman of Panthers Party, Bhim Singh, does deserve appreciation for his timely interventions at critical junctures, notwithstanding his inability to achieve his stated objective: reorganization of Jammu and Kashmir and separate assembly and separate chief minister for Jammu province. Bhim Singh has done in the state no other leader could do, not even the so-called ultra-nationalist and pro-Jammu BJP. It would be only reasonable to say that it is because of his interventions that the Kashmiri leadership could not implement its certain controversial and divisive decisions. Bhim Sigh's first notable intervention was during the time of Sheikh Abdullah. Chief Minister Sheikh Abdullah wanted to implement what was called by many "a black bill" (Bill No. 13) to enable those who had migrated to Pakistan in the wake of the communal partition of India in August 1947 and become Pakistani citizens to return to Jammu and re-occupy the properties, called the evacuee property, they had left behind. Had the Sheikh been able to give effect to this Bill, thousands and thousands of people -- predominantly refugees from Pakistan-occupied-Jammu and Kashmir -- would have been displaced and rendered homeless. It was Bhim Singh who knocked at the doors of the Supreme Court of India and came to the rescue of these refugees, all victims of radical Islamists or the protagonists of two-nation theory. The years 2010 and 2011 also saw Bhim Singh knocking at the doors of the Supreme Court of India. First he approached the apex court to seek its intervention to defeat the NC-Congress coalition government's decision that was designed to induce or motivate the POJK and Pakistan-based terrorists of Kashmiri origin to come back to Kashmir and enjoy official patronage. In other words, he urged the Supreme Court to reject the return and rehabilitation policy on the ground that this policy, if implemented, would endanger national unity and help the otherwise defeated extremists and separatists intensify their anti-India activities. The case is still pending in the Supreme Court. The second time he approached the Apex court was in October 2011 and this time he urged the Supreme Court to allow a CBI probe into the circumstances leading to the death of loyalist of the Abdullah family Sayeed Mohammad Yousuf. This case is also pending in the Supreme Court. These are only three of the several such instances which serve to demonstrate Bhim Singh's vehement opposition to the controversial decisions of the state government. It is important to note that he has also fought legal battles for those who were victimized by the government of India for one reason or the other. His latest intervention was on behalf of the Grenadiers' Association, Rohtak Chapter. The Grenadiers' Association had filed a PIL seeking justice for Chief of Army Staff General V K Singh. The Grenadiers' Association wants General Singh to complete his term, which, according to his original date of birth, ends on May 31, 2013. It needs to be noted that the Congress-led UPA Government wants General Singh to demit office on May 31 this year rejecting the General's original date of birth. This has created a serious controversy across the country with even the international community watching with interest what the Government of India has been doing to lower the morale of the Army by virtually humiliating the General or by conveying an impression that our General is a liar. The otherwise crumbling Pakistan must be feeling very happy. The PIL came up before the Supreme Court on January 20. Bhim Singh presented the Grenadiers' Association. The Supreme Court, according to Bhim Singh, was "reluctant to hear him". Any way, after hearing all the concerned for almost 60 mintues, the Bench headed by the Chief Justice rejected the PIL as "not maintainable". The media described the dismissal of the PIL as the "first major defeat" of the General, something not in good taste. This is not the way to react to and comment on such very sensitive issues. Bhim Singh did lose the case, but what he spoke after the Chief Justice announced the verdict was something very bold. He questioned the rationale behind the verdict. In fact, he questioned the very judgment of the Chief Justice saying the verdict has undermined the very credibility of the Indian justice system. He was bold and blunt and he didn't even care for the consequences of what he said about the Chief Justice of India. He not only attacked the Chief Justice of India who, according to him, had refused to entertain the opinion of four former Chief Justices of India on the issue, but also denounced the Government of India and the Defence Ministry for creating an unnecessary controversy over the age issue. He also declared that he would now go to the Full Bench. The entire nation witnessed live Bhim Singh speaking against those who have been seeking to undermine the institution of Army. Doesn't this son of the soil deserve some appreciation? He does. |
