BJP on the brink of ruin | | | Early Times Report jammu, Jan 22: The state unit of the BJP is "withering away". This is what the insiders say. They say that the state BJP president has "no say" in the party and that he is "running the show with the help of a couple of office-bearers, including one of the party spokesperson who joined the BJP a couple of years ago after quitting the Congress party". There are two more spokespersons in the BJP. One of them has gone "totally dormant because no one in the party is taking him into confidence or asking into represent the party views either through print media or in TV debates on issues concerning Jammu and Kashmir". The third spokesperson does speak on occasions and issue press statements from time to time but he, according to the insiders, is "not being allowed to reflect on the issues the way he wants". The insiders say that "while certain office-bearers want the party to adopt a pro-active approach towards Kashmir and the Congress-led UPA's Kashmir policy and make the issues facing Jammu province the main plank in its programme, there are others who want the party to go soft for reasons best known to them". The insiders say that the "present president doesn't enjoy good relations with the two former state BJP presidents". Significantly, they also reveal that "these former BJP presidents also do not see eye to eye with each other". "They", according to the insiders, "want to contest the next Lok Sabha elections. Both have their supporters in the 11 Ashoka Road, the party headquarters, and "their support is based on caste consideration and not merit. One is being supported by a Rajput leader and the other by a Brahmin leader". "Its cut-throat competition between the two," the insiders reveal. "The present incumbent, besides one of the spokespersons, also wants to contest the Lok Sabha election and this has intensified power struggle within the BJP, with each of these four top-ranking office-bearers working against each other," the insiders say. There are two more candidates for the Lok Sabha seats. One of them is a MLA and other state vice-president, according to them. The insiders further reveal that there is one more office-bearer who is "working beyond the curtain to secure his own position so that he is considered for one of the two Lok Sabha seats in Jammu province". "He, like at least two other senior party leaders, wants to contest from the Jammu-Poonch Parliamentary constituency," reveal the insiders, and add that there are "at least four candidates for the Udhampur-Doda Parliamentary Constituency". According to these insiders, "two of the three general secretaries of the party have become totally defunct because they are just incompetent to project themselves or to work for the expansion of the party". "They also remained confined within the four walls of the houses and attend the party but without expressing any view," the insiders also reveal. The third general secretary is "somewhat active but he has been conducting himself in a manner that undermines the position of the others, including the state BJP president". This is what the insiders say about the three general secretaries. They also reveal that "there are at least six party leaders who are lobbying for the post of party president". However, the most startling revelation made by the insiders is that "the party high command is upset with the power-struggle that is going on within the party" and that "it has also virtually raised its hands saying that things in the party has deteriorated to the point where it has become almost impossible to set the BJP house in the state in order". These insiders go on to reveal that "they are feeling highly amused because there is hardly anyone in the state BJP who can carry conviction with the people or who has the ability and capability of winning any election". So much so that these insiders ridicule these "over-ambitious, unpopular and self-styled BJP leaders" revealing that "most of them stand totally discredited because of their politics of opportunism and political bankruptcy". If what these insiders reveal is to be taken on the face value, then it can be safely said the BJP is not just faction-ridden but also on the verge of collapse. It is not a good omen for the official BJP. Its leadership needs to sink their differences at the earliest so that it is able to play some role in the state politics. The task is difficult but not impossible. |
