What if IAF hadn't come to rescue of stranded passengers? | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Jan 22: The failure of the State government to address the problems of the people in the Valley during the recent snowfall has exposed the inherent fault in the policies and priorities of the state administration. Failure to ensure that the oil companies in the Valley maintained enough LPG stocks during the winter cannot be washed away by saying an enquiry will be held into the dealings of these oil companies. What was the state CAPD department doing all this time? Isn't it the duty of the CAPD authorities to check and verify the stocks of LPG maintained in the Valley? How can the State government escape the responsibility by simply wishing off its obligation towards the people? It is not just the LPG supplies those frustrated the people in the Valley during the recent snowfall. Kerosene oil, sugar, pulses, foodstuffs, eggs, poultry, mutton, vegetables and all other essential items of life were in acute shortage supply and despite the official claims that the supply position of essential commodities has now stabilized, the shortages continue to bother the common man in cities, towns and villages of the Valley. Except for the good job done by the PDD which maintained a steady supply of electricity during the recent snowfall, all other departments of the administration were conspicuous by their absence. It is unheard of that the state police should have been employed to ensure rationing of LPG cylinders. It is also unheard of that LPG cylinders filled with just 5 Kgs of gas are supplied to the consumers. If this is the position of essential supplies in Srinagar city and other major towns of the Valley what is the reality of essential supplies in far off areas of Gurez, Karnah, Keran, Machil, Tangdhar and Chowkibal? The people in the cities and towns often make their problems felt by going to the media or by staging protests to attract the attention of the administration. But, in the far off areas of the Valley the people living there are always left to the mercy of nature. Their problems do not usually get a mention in the media because of lack of communication. This situation is often exploited by the authorities who hold that since there has been no hue and cry in the remote areas it means all is well there. When ministers and even the MLAs abandon their constituencies during adverse weather conditions only to return after the weather improves, the plight of the poor citizens is not difficult to imagine. When ministers are busy inaugurating buildings, bridges and laying foundation stones, who will listen to the problems of the famished people in the remote areas of the State. Had the Indian Air Force not come to the rescue of the state administration hundreds of tourists would have remained marooned in the Valley and hundreds of Kashmiris would have remained marooned in the winter capital. This much for the efficiency of the State government which has been issuing full page advertisements in newspapers claiming to have converted the State into heaven! |
