| Workshop on CEDAW inaugurated at JU | | | Jammu | Jan 15 A two day orientation workshop on Convention on Elimination of all forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) was inaugurated today at University of Jammu (JU). Dean Academic Affairs (DAA), Prof. B P S Sehgal was the chief Guest during the occasion. Prof. Pam Rajput, Consultant, National Consultative Committee on Women Studies, UGC is the main resource person for this two days workshop. Centre for Women Studies (CWS), JU is organizing this workshop. Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Sehgal emphasized on the need for creating large scale awareness among the masses for providing equality to the females in the society. He expressed concerns over the discrimination with women despite of the fact that several laws have been enacted for their welfare. While, Prof. Pam Rajput in her address urged upon the women folk to come forward in a big way to mitigate their sufferings. The convention recognizes women’s rights to equal opportunities and life chances in the family, the community and within countries. India ratified the convention in 1993 she said. She lambasted central government for inordinate delay in the submission of CEDAW report in UN. Later, she presented a book titled Conceptualizing Islamic Law, CEDAW and Women’s Human Rights in Plural Legal Settings” to Prof. Sehgal. Earlier, Prof. Poonam Dhawan, Director CWS presented the welcome address and threw light over the need to organize such workshops. She expressed gratitude towards Prof. Pam for coming all the way from Chandigarh to attend this workshop. The programme aims at building knowledge in the application of CEDAW, she added. Sixty participants from post graduate departments of University, Law School and five Law Colleges of Jammu participated. Dr. Priyanka Katoch, Lecturer CWS, Deepti Gupta and Vibhuti Ubbott, Research Officers were also present during the workshop.
