BJP opposes "user charges, water charges" | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Jan 23: The State government is adding to the problems of people by burdening them with "user charges" through Municipal Corporations and steep increase in "water charges" through PHE. These decisions are totally unwarranted and uncalled for on account of non-existent service by the Municipality and extremely poor water supply by PHE and BJP terms it as an attempt to loot the people who are already groaning under crushing burden of price rise and rampant corruption of the NC-Congress government. This was alleged by Jammu Mahanagar President Rajesh Gupta while addressing a press conference at party headquarters here today. Rajesh Gupta said that the recent decision of the Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) to charge Rs 600 annually (Rs 50 per month) from every family under its jurisdiction on the name of "User Charges" is not justified. The JMC has failed to provide dependable and adequate services to the people and there have been repeated complaints against its mal-functioning. It has not provided basic infrastructure and required number of safai karamcharies. The city of temples has been turned into city of garbage, which speaks how much concerned the JMC has been towards providing the sanitation services. The much publicized "Solid Waste Management Project" has not seen the light of the day despite the fact that it stands sanctioned long ago. The reason for delay is best known to the government and its concerned department. The government should instead of delaying Local Bodies elections hold the same at the earliest so that public has some means of channelizing their grievances and seek remedies through their local representatives. Rajesh Gupta further said that the PHE Department too has made 125% hike in water charges. From Rs 360 per year, it has now been raised to Rs 800 per year for domestic purposes. Not only this, water charges for commercial purposes have been hiked even more. It is known to all that there is no regular supply of drinking water especially during the summer when it is most needed. Gupta also expressed concerned over the traffic management in the city and intentional delay in construction of already sanctioned three fly-overs and 14 sub-ways in Jammu city. |
