1/23/2012 10:54:51 PM
Early Times Report
Kathua, Jan 23: The yellow rust has targeted the major wheat growing are of Nagari, Jakhbar, Muthi, Kokhyal, Saidpur, Arma, Pandori, Padyari Sumoa and several other areas of Kandi belt also due to the untimely raining.
The Agriculture officers said that the, yellow rust also known as Stripe rust, caused by the fungus Puccinia striiformis, has devastated cereal production worldwide due to rapid systemic infection of affected plants resulting in defoliation and shrived kernels.
Too low winter temperatures and untimely rain may be for the fungus to survive locally, and causing substantial losses in some wheat fields. They urged the farmers in order to tackle the attack of yellow rust on wheat they should use the chemical in adequate quantity of the chemical as per the direction of the agriculture department judiciously. They said that the yield losses can be reduced or prevented by timely fungicide application which requires inspecting the crop regularly for symptoms starting at seedling stage. It is important to plan an inspection just before flag leaf emergence. Year-round cropping including winter and spring wheat, barley and grass provides living hosts known as a green bridge for the pathogen to survive, with subsequent infection and development of stripe rust.
An integrated approach using durable resistance and appropriate cultural practices will allow producers to effectively implement sustainable control strategies for stripe rust management and also Chemical control represents an effective short-term strategy to counter the yellow rust.
They further told that the yellow rust is an air born disease and the untimely rain may also bring the entire crop under the influence of yellow rust so all the farmers are advised to approach the department for technical know-how in respect of protecting the wheat crop. They said the area of Andar and kandi belt both are on target of yellow rust so farmers of the area should not be delayed to get the guidelines of the agriculture department.
