KISHTWAR, Jan 23: Three ex-militants of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) have turned out to be the killers of SPO Mohammad Hanief whose body was recovered from Kishtwar forests in December last year.
The accused were identified as Mohammad Rafi, son of Abdul Rashid Mochi of Sarthal Saroor, Shahnawaz alias Bilal Ahmed Khandey, son of Ghulam Mohammad Khandey, and Nafees Munwar Khandey, son of Mohammad Munwar Khandey, both residents of Sozna Palmar.
While Nafees was arrested by police, the other two were said to have fled their houses and again joined militant ranks.
Talking to reporters here today, DSP, headquarters, Abrar Choudhary said the SPO, who was posted in Doda, was trapped by the three ex-militants to conduct an operation in Kishtwar to eliminate HM divisional commander Mohammad Amin Butt alias Jehangir, an accused in Delhi court blasts, in Palmar area.
He said on December 3 last year, Rafi came in contact with the SPO and told him that he knew about the present location of Jehangir in Palmar area. The SPO then took up the matter with senior police officers who then planned to launch an operation on December 5 night, he added.
But the operation was delayed due to the presence of army in the area. Rafi again came in contact with the SPO on December 8, 2011, at bus stand, Kishtwar, and planned the operation afresh.
The DSP said the SPO called the operation party from Doda and asked it to camp at Thatri till he gave further instructions. The operation party was headed by selection grade cop Sandeep Kumar.
The SPO and Rafi then left for Sozna Palmar. When they reached there, they were received by Bilal and Nafees.
The SPO was told by them that Jehangir would come at the desired location in the wee hours of the next day and accordingly he had to stay at some safer place till next morning.
He said the SPO and Rafi stayed in the house of private school teacher Sandeep, son of Dhani Ram. Sandeep was told by Bilal that they were employees of JKSBOSE and had come from Jammu in connection with exam duties of 12th class.
Food for the SPO and Rafi was managed in the house of Sandeep by Bilal and Nafees, he added.
In wee hours of morning on December 9, 2011, the SPO and the three ex-militants left for their destination to "kill" Jehangir. However, when they reached there, Rafi shot the SPO dead with a pistol given to him allegedly by an intelligence agency, the DSP said.
Hiding his body in bushes, the three militants returned homes along with the SPO's bag
which contained one AK 47 tiffle, 4 AK magazines and a loaded pistol.
The matter came to light on December 10 after some locals saw the SPO's body and informed police. While probing into the matter, police later arrested Nafees but the other two fled their homes. The absconders were said to have joined militancy.
Nafeesh too planned to rejoin militancy and was waiting for the delivery of the weapon to him. He was, however, arrested before he could escape.
The DSP said some incriminating documents were recovered from the possession of Nafeesh who interrogation was on.
Police were likely to pick up militant sympathisers from Kishtwar and other areas, including Dool. One of them was said to be a CAPD dealer, he added.
