KP leaders thumb down Bakaya's defense of NC
Mass exodus of KPs from valley

JAMMU, Jan 23: Following Congress leader Ashok Bhan's pot shots against National Conference over Kashmiri Pandits' mass exodus from Kashmir Valley in 1990 and a desperate attempt by NC leader Vijay Bakaya to defend his party, it is now the turn of the Kashmiri Pandit leaders representing various organizations to join the chorus.
Holding National Conference responsible for Kashmiri Pandit community's migration from valley none other than by a senior Congress leader has made the issue alive once again and gave one more opportunity to those who bore the brunt of migration in speaking their heart out against 'those' who were really accountable for whatever they have gone through all these years.
Talking to Early Times, KP leaders said that it was NC' policIes and poor handling of the situation in late 80s which forced the mass exodus of Kashmiri pandits from different parts of the Valley.
"The fact of the matter is that NC leadership abdicated its role and responsibility at that time while left the Kashmiri Pandits at the mercy of wolves (secessionist forces)," Ashwani Chrungoo, president Panun Kashmir (PK) told Early Times.
Launching a scathing attack on Union Minister and NC patron Dr Farooq Abdullah, Chrungoo said that the timing of Abdullah's departure from Kashmir also played a part in kicking off the KPs' migration process in that period of turmoil.
"In that dark phase of violence, disorder and confusion Dr Abdullah left the valley for London in a huff, not even thinking remotely that what would happen to the people of the state and what would be their fate," Chrungoo maintained.
PK leader said that the effect of militancy at that time was such that scores of NC and Congress activists as well as functionaries left their respective parties and bowed before the anti-national elements.
"A large number of functionaries from both NC and Congress deserted their parties and extended support to secessionist viz a viz terrorist onslaught in Kashmir," PK leader said adding that KPs were the victims of horror unleashed against them which was aimed at their ethnic cleansing from Kashmir.
Another prominent Kashmir Pandit leader Ajay Chrungoo also squarely blamed NC for KPs' migration.
"It was communal establishment with in and outside the government which forced the KPs to leave their homeland…. NC, no doubt, had always played a role in Valley to strengthen and promote the communal establishment which instigated the exodus of KPs from Valley," Ajay Chrungoo, Chairman Panun Kashmir said.
The timing and motive of the Congress to accuse NC for the mass migration of KPs from valley has not only stirred a hornet's nest but it has also confused and baffled the NC leadership who never expected it to come from an unexpected quarter like Congress since the grand old party of the country is its alliance partner in the state.
