7 soldiers missing in avalanche near LoC | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Srinagar, Jan 24: At least seven soldiers are missing after being hit by an avalanche in Firkian forests near line of control in Kupwara sector. Police sources said that five army and two BSF soldiers were clearing a road heading to 266 Brigade after heavy snowfall near the Line of control in Firkian forests in Kupwara District when they were trapped in huge avalanche. "All the seven soldiers were swept away by the avalanche and there has been no clue since," they added. Police Sources said that the missing personnel belonged to the 5th regiment of First Bihar Brigade and Alfa Company of 126 BSF Brigade. The missing soldiers have been identified as Mangat Parth Singh, Muneesh Mahan, Nateesh Kumar, Ajay Kumar all belonging to 5thregiment of First Bihar Brigade and Sub Inspector Nareender Singh and Rajesh Singh of Alfa Company of 126 BSF Brigade. SSP Kupwara V K Birdi while confirming the incident told that two bodies have been recovered whereas the search for the remaining five was on. "Personnel were buried under the avalanche in Keran sector of the Line of Control (LOC) in Kupwara district, said Lt. Col. J.S. Brar, spokesperson of the army's Srinagar-based 15th Corps adding the avalanche struck a road clearing party near one of our posts at 0720hrs. "A rescue operation, which was immediately started, is still on," he added. |
