SMVDU fast losing sheen, VC under scanner | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Jan 24: One of State's most prestigious universities, the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU) is fast losing its sheen as the premier seat of knowledge and learning in the State. Established as a statutory university under an act of J&K Legislature in 1999, the SMVDU is in for serious allegations of corruption, nepotism and bias. The heavy cloud of mismanagement hanging over the University is diminishing its popularity and status. The most serious part of the allegations about SMVDU is that the conduct of the University's Vice Chancellor is being called into question. It is reliably learnt that some of the aggrieved officers working in the University have submitted a complaint to the State Raj Bhawan, copies of which have also been forwarded to the President of India, the Prime Minister of India and the Congress Party chairperson, Sonia Gandhi for information. These complaints have called into question the efficiency of the Vice Chancellor as the complainants have alleged that the University has got a meagre response to MBA seats to be filled through CAT. Only 145 forms have been sold through bank and online as compared to overwhelming response from the aspirants for this course in the past. The reason for this sad state of affairs is stated to be the inefficiency of the University administration. Levelling further allegations, the complainants have said in order to give benefits to the branch manager of UCO Bank branch Transport Nagar, the VC of the University has passed instructions to deposit the University fees through this very branch whereas two nationalized banks have their branches inside the University campus. "The decision has been taken deliberately to give undue benefit to the UCO bank branch Manager who happens to be a close relative of the VC," the complaint alleges. Further, allegations have also been leveled against Dr. Sunil Kumar Wanchoo, Assistant Professor of Physics. It has been stated that Wanchoo was made coordinator of Government of India sponsored project, Melt Lab through which he was allotted two vehicles- a mini bus and a Tata mobile. Though, the project has failed two years back yet the vehicles are standing in front of the VC residence. Interestingly, the daily log books of these vehicles are updated regularly causing financial loss to the government of India as well as the University. Demanding a high level probe, the complainants further maintain that the same professor was made in charge of another government of India project - INSPIRE, where again Wanchoo hired two vehicles at the charges of Rs 1500 per day but the bills were inflated to Rs 3000 per day. |
