Early Times Report
JAMMU, Jan 24: Notwithstanding a high alert sounded in Jammu ahead of Republic Day celebration, the volunteers of Civil Defence assisting Jammu police while frisking and checking of vehicles are virtually playing a non serious role.
With just two days left for Republic Day celebration, the volunteers of Civil Defence are assisting police with a casual approach. Furthermore, many complaints have been received by police officers from the city residents that volunteers of Civil Defence misbehave while checking the vehicles posing as "Bosses".
"Is it policing or hooliganism?" questioned Dunni Ram, a city resident. "On late Monday evening, I was on way to Railway Station, Jammu to drop a friend. I was asked to stop by volunteers of Civil Defence. Instead of politely asking for document of my motorbike, they (volunteers of Civil Defence) used a very rude language. When I pointed out, they hurled abusive language as if I was some criminal or suspect," narrated Dunni Ram further adding that "it was only when I approached a police officer standing on the checking point, I was allowed to go."
"It is shocking to see, how such persons are openly making mockery of policing. On one side, a high alert has been sounded and suspects are being picked up and questioned to neutralize any attempt of anti-national elements on the occasion of Republic Day. On the other side, such incidents of misbehave and abusive language indicates how serious are police officers concerned," pointed out Abhimanyu Singh, another city resident.
"It seems, a reign of fear is being created among innocent commoners by so called volunteers. I was in hurry to reach Government Medical College to see a relative, who was no well. I was given a signal to stop on a Naka at Bikram Chowk. Before anybody approached me I immediately came out with my driving license, registration certificate of my vehicle and also the Insurance document. I knew it was checking due to Republic Day. I requested one of the Civil Defence volunteers to see the document and allow me to go as soon as possible," narrated Suresh Sharma and added that "I was made to stand for ten minutes. And in between that time period, I was shocked to see those volunteers allowing some vehicles without checking as those persons were their 'friends'." "When I objected to that and warned them that I will take up the matter to senior police officers, a sarcastic comment was passed on me 'Ja Jiske Pass Jana Hai Ja. Jo Hamara Bigaadana Hoga Bigaad Lena. Chal Ja Yahan Se'," shared Sharma further posing a simple query to the top police brass that "Is there someone who could come forward to make a people friendly policing and save the image of police which is deteriorating day by day?"
