Fearing reprisal from PDP, government defers election to four LC seats | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Jan 25: A day after Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ali Muhammad Sagar said that elections to the four vacant seats of Legislative Council from Panchayat quota are unlikely to be held in near future, sources, in the government attribute the deferment of elections to the fear of defeat at the hands of opposition Peoples Democratic Party. "There are certain reasons due to which there can not be immediate elections to the four seats from Panchayat quota to the Upper House", the minister had said on Tuesday. Fearing defeat in Kashmir division from opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the National Conference led coalition government has decided to put the elections on reserved seats under Panchayat quota, on hold for the time being even after the Election Commission in reply to a communication from the state government has asked the state government to convey the convenient dates to the commission before a notification is issued to this effect. Though the Law Minister Ali Muhammad Sagar failed to cite reasons for the deferment of elections to the reserved Legislative Council seats under Panchayat quota, the only reason could be the fear of reprisal from opposition PDP which has claimed sweeping victory in the panchyat elections held last year, sources said. "Interestingly, the state government earlier wrote to the Election Commission and when the commission asked it to convey the convenient dates enabling the commission to issue notification, the state government has suddenly backtracked" said the sources. When contacted a senior National Conference leader wishing anonymity said that the electoral college for the seats under Panchayat is a vulnerable one, nothing could be said with authenticity. "Though we have a clear majority of Panches and Sarpanches in valley yet nothing could be said, after all who knows about the mood of the electorate at a given point of time" said the NC leader. However, PDP chief spokesperson Naeem Akhtar said that the NC led government was not serious in devolution of powers to the panchayat and don't want to implement panchayat raj in the state. "It is part of that mindset, they have again deferred the elections to the four seats of the Council under Panchayat quota" Naeem said adding further that there is no accountability and transparency in the system. NC, Naeem Akhtar said, was just doing hollow sloganeering and they have, in fact reduced panchayats to begging bowls. |
