Jammu celebrates Republic Day with enthusiasm amid security | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Jan 26: The winter capital of Jammu and Kashmir today celebrated the 63rd Republic Day amid tight security arrangements. The main function was held at Maulana Azad Stadium situated in the heart of the city wherein Governor N N Vohra was the chief guest, who took the ceremonial salute besides inspecting the guard of honour and march past contingents comprising army, para-military forces, police, college as well as school students. The function started with the address of the Governor followed by march past and drills presented by the contingents of schools, security forces, army and NGOs. Thousands of school children and college girls presented colorful cultural items, including traditional folk songs, besides bhangra and 'bhartyam' which mesmerised the gathering. 'The Dare Devils' show by the team of Jammu and Kashmir Police remained highlight of the day. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah announced Rs 1 lakh and the Director General of Police Kuldeep Khoda declared Rs 75,000 for the dare devils for their spellbound performances. The Dare devil team led by Head Constable Fayaz Ahmed was established in 2000 and for the first time they performed at Bakshi Stadium in Srinagar in 2002. Tight security arrangements were made across the winter capital with additional deployment of troops and raised check points for security reasons. |
