As police lack will to regulate traffic, jams on roads become regular feature | | | Bharat Bhushan JAMMU, Jan 26: It is not that police are incompetent to regulate vehicular traffic. The reality is that they lack the will to do so. On January 25 and 26, city roads witnessed no traffic jam. Reason: minibuses -- the main violators of traffic rules on roads -- followed the set norms. Instead of picking, or dropping commuters in the middle of the road, at congested rotaries, or the places where there are bottle-necks, minibuses were seen stopping at the places earmarked for them, leaving ample space for other vehicles to move. Their operators had of course been directed by traffic police to follow this rule to avoid jams on the Republic Day eve. As a standard measure against any act of sabotage, jamming on roads is discouraged on all such occasions. At Mian Dido chowk, Rehari Chungi, Jewel and on B C Road, it was a hassle-free drive on Wednesday. Minibuses waited for commuters by the roadsides without causing any trouble to other vehicles. Normally, two-three minibuses would stop in the middle of the road to pick, or drop commuters, resulting in traffic jams. Traffic cops were seen taking strict action against those minibus operators who stopped in the middle of the road to pick, or drop commuters. And, this showed immediate results. No blockade was witnessed anywhere on city roads. If traffic cops discharge their duties with the same spirit and dedication as they showed on R-Day eve, there would be no mess on roads. But that was possible only if they exercised their authority by means of rules and restrictions, leaving aside their "vested" interests. To achieve the desired results, traffic cops of proven track record were needed to put on roads. Those known for their lackadaisical ways of working were needed to be shown a way out. Few days back, a lady traffic police officer had failed in every way to regulate traffic near Sitli close to the traffic check post there. Her this inefficiency had led to a 2-3 hour long traffic jam. She was later seen shouting at some car operators for no fault of theirs. Such scenes are often witnessed here. Instead of frightening those with stern looks and words, who are not at fault, police ought to show sincerity in acting tough against chronic violators of traffic norms. This could be the first genuine step towards traffic regulation. |
