Early Times Report
Jammu, Jan 26: The father son duo-Abdullahs have once again managed well to bring into focus the much controversial AFSPA issue , this time taking leverage of the SC observation on Pathribal encounter in which it admonished the Army for seeking immunity under the Act. Both Union Minister Dr Farooq Abdullah as well as Chief Minister Omar Abdullah have asserted the need for looking into necessity of what NC has been contending with regard to partial revocation of AFSPA.
One cannot comment nor is it appropriate to comment on SC's observations against Army with particular reference to Pathribal case. But one is surely prompted to ask NC leadership few questions in that context. One that why it feels expediency of raking up AFSPA issue again and again when it very well knows that its own alliance partner in the state has simply put its foot down and conveyed in clear terms it was not possible nor in the larger interests of security to what Chief Minister has been asking for.
Even the quarters that matter in New Delhi in giving final nod have conveyed so in implicit tone and tenor, notwithstanding the initial support Home Ministry expressed until the whole issue got entangled into a virtual fight between two vital Union ministers, with everyone crying loud for discussion and debate by all stakeholders only to end up in a whimper at present when no signs of any discussion nor any debate at any level is visible. The point in question is that there is still no mood for the ultimate powers that be in even considering or bringing into debate the issue about which NC and its leadership crying hoarse time and again.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah not only raked up the issue on Monday after SC's observations came but also on Wednesday in his address on the eve of Republic Day said he was committed to the revocation of Armed Forces Special Powers Act from the state in a gradual fashion. The political observers are only looking at the fresh 'rhetoric' on AFSPA quite unusual by any head of government in the address related to Republic Day. While talking about issues of development and peace and for that matter the need for restarting the dialogue process and the mention of interlocutors and their report etc can be allowed to be accommodated in the address , the issue of AFSPA and reiterating commitment on its revocation in the backdrop of political realities and ground situation in terms of the mood of the powers that be, is only being seen as political steps to score points in the constituency which is on a sticky wicket on account of many factors.
Omar in the speech has asserted on the similar lines that since there has been gradual improvement in the situation with the passage of time and the process of improvement is going on as such his endeavour would be to continue to work for revocation of these laws.
