Extension unit of MIER College organizes extension lecture in slum area | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Jan 27: An extension lecture on the theme 'Effects of Domestic Violence' was organized by the Extension Unit of MIER College of Education at Kabir Basti, B.C.Road Jammu. Angela Gadroo, senior lecturer B.Ed. Deptt MIER was the resource person on the occasion. A group of 20 students of extension activity unit visited the Kabir Basti slum area. The resource person deliberated upon the issue of domestic violence. She informed that domestic violence has many forms, including physical aggression or assault, threats thereof; sexual abuse; emotional abuse; domineering; intimidation; passive/covert abuse (e.g., neglect); and economic deprivation. Alcohol consumption, mental illness, unemployment of the spouse, economic problems, adjustment problems and lack of education can be the main causes. She also drew attention of the slum dwellers towards some other triggers of domestic violence like dowry demands, economic deprivation, lack of social networking and sharing. She then laid stress on the need to become literate and socially and legally aware to overcome the problem of domestic violence. Economic empowerment, social networking and asserting their right were some of the other remedies suggested by the learned resource person. The participants showed a keen interest towards the issue and also shared some of their personal experiences related to this issue. Anu Sharma, incharge of extension unit formally thanked the resource person, the members of extension activities unit of MIER as well as the participants from the slum area. |
