Early Times Report
Jammu, Jan 27: Taj-Vakil (two senior Congress leaders)tussle over corruption charges took a serious turn when Abdul Ghani Vakil rubbished what he termed as 'threatening of defamation case' by PHE minister against his remarks of mismanagement and financial irregularities allegedly in the departments under the minister. Vakil accused Taj of showing high handedness and irresponsive attitude in the whole matter by choosing to 'threaten' him of dragging to court instead of ordering probe into the matters that have been brought to light . Seeking immediate intervention of UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Youth leader Rahul Gandhi, Vakil has contended if the politicians from Kalmadi to Kanimozhi faced axe of the government, why a minister from J&K facing similar allegations should remain insulated from such action.
In a statement Vakil today accused Taj Mohi-u-Din of having chosen to maintain 'criminal silence' despite revelations of so many scams and financial mismanagement brought into his notice for quite some time. "This speaks of your responsive attitude and lack of will to fight corrupt practices rampant in your department…..", Vakil observed alleging further that corruption cases pending against Taj in State Accountability Commission (SAC), land grabbing case going on against him and family and various scams surfacing from time to time in various divisions of Public Health Engineering (PHE) and Irrigation departments have already done enough harm to the Congress party in particular."It is strange that despite all this you are talking of defamation suits against those who have dared to raise voice against corruption, which is inopportune and regrettable…..", Vakil lamented. He further added that instead of taking cognizance of revelations made by the media , party workers and senior colleagues , instead of holding enquiry into alleged bungling, PHE minister, in a typical dictatorial attitude has chosen to shoot a letter to him. Vakil however denied of having received any such letter which Taj claimed to have sent few days back. " It is shocking and disgraceful that you are now trying to snub me, which is irresponsive, arrogant and uncalled for on your part", Vakil observed in the statement. Vakil also said that by doing so Taj has breached and defeated the mandate of Smt. Sonia Gandhi and Congress party in fighting the menace of corruption in the state.
Levelling serious allegations against State PHE minister, Taj Mohiuddin, a group of middle rung Congress party activists have sought intervention by Congress president, Sonia Gandhi and general secretary, Rahul Gandhi.
"Corruption cases are pending against PHE minister in State Accountability Commission (SAC), land grabbing case is going on against the minister and his family in the state high court and various scams surfacing from time to time in various divisions of Public Health Engineering (PHE) and Irrigation departments have already done enough harm to the Congress party in particular and now the minister is talking of defamation suits against those who have dared to raise voice against corruption, which is inopportune and regrettable."
It is absurd and ironical that those who have defamed the Congress party are talking about filing defamation suits and that too against those who are working like watchdogs of the society and had dared to raise a voice against.
The statement blames the minister for shielding corrupt officials in the departments under his control.
The statement said it was unfortunate that while Sonia Gandhi along with her team has launched crusade against corruption and it was towards this end that people like Suresh Kalmadi, Shashi Tharoor, Natwar Singh, A Raja, Kanimozi and former Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan had to face the axe, a minister with such serious allegations of corruption and nepotism against him should be allowed to continue in the government.
Citing some glaring examples of serious misuse of power the statement quoted media reports of these instances which were not even commented upon by the minister:-1.Glimpses of Future dated May 26, 2009 had mentioned about, "Multi-crore scam in PHE Division, Rajouri" and cited 13 such schemes wherein PHE officers had flouted norms to favour some contractors. Greater Kashmir dated 20-9-2011 has said, "Theft of pipes in PHE Division Bijbihara". No inquiry initiated.7. Daily Excelsior dated November 16, 2011 had cited Hon'ble high court orders alleging a piece of land measuring 342 kanals 4 marl as under illegal possession of the minister's daughters.8. News Till Date dated January 23, 2011 had accused the minister of being strong headed and overlooking complaints with a head line "corruption at rampant in PHE Department"9. Document of SAC dated 26-2-2009 had also mentioned the minister's name as the former minister CAPD at serial number 3 with complaint number J-11-2006 stating that a regular inquiry was pending against the minister proceedings of which were stayed by Hon'ble High Court.10. Early Times dated 9-12-2011 says Public Accounts Committee (PAC) reveals major fraud in PRE Department.11. Greater Kashmir Date 26 January 2012 had carried a statement of former minister Usman Majid alleging large scale loot in PHE Division, Bandipora. He too had demanded a probe into the financial mess.12. Greater ·Kashmir dated 23-9-2011 says, "PHE records go missing in fake recruitment scam".13. Rising Kashmir dated 6-10-20 II "Contractors Union, Kulgam appeals Chief Minister to intervene in PHE Division Kulgam asking officers to restrain from misusing funds".
The list of allegations also says the Regional Rohama Water Scheme in Rafiabad (Baramulla), started four years back is still no-functional despite the minister's assurance that the scheme would be functional by the end of last year.
