15 per cent population diabetic in Jammu: Dr. Jitendra | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Jan 28: Presenting an alarming data, renowned diabetologist Dr. Jitendra Singh today said that in Jammu and surrounding areas, the prevalence of diabetes is over 15 per cent of the population. He has said that unofficially the figure could be much higher and more studies are needed to know the exact figures. Dr. Singh said that the cases of diabetics among the youth and women in Jammu has shown increased trend in recent years mainly due to the lifestyle change, which is major reason for the spread of the disease. He was speaking during a medical camp organised by Shakti Nagar Welfare Forum in collaboration with Universal Foundation under the supervision of Dineshwar Singh Jamwal. During the camp free medical advice, free blood test and free medicines were made available to the needy patients on the occasion. Dr. Singh said even though new remedies including genetic therapies are being tried for treatment of diabetes, the basic "mantra" is life style modification- including control of body weight, regular physical exercise, timely balanced food and relief from stress. He particularly called upon the parents to discourage their children against junk food and lack of outdoor sports which led to obesity in adolescent age. During the camp he was assisted by a team of doctors including Dr. Rajesh Bhagat, Physician Specialist, Dr. Sandeep Dhar, Physiotherapist, Dr. Pankaj Gupta, eye specialist. Also present at the camp were Shakti Nagar Welfare Forun activists including Sant Kumar Sharma, Parveen Sharma, Vinod Sharma, Surinder Choudhary, Rakesh Verma, Chetan Mehra and Anil Kumar. |
