In J&K, BJP has been orphaned by hasty decisions of its leadership | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Jan 28: Have the seven MLAs,thrown out of the party on charge of defying the party whip by indulging in cross voting in April Legislative Council election, rendered the BJP in Jammu and Kashmir an orphan ?Or has the BJP high command orphaned the seven MLAs who had won the 2008 Assembly election as BJP candidates ? This question seems to have defied an accurate answer because both sides keep on waiting for the moves of each side.As far as the future of the seven MLAs is concerned the ball is in the court of the High Court and the speaker of the Assembly. The speaker has issued a notice to both sides to explain their position. This itself indicates that there are no specific means with the speaker to determine whether the seven MLAs indulged in cross voting or not or all the seven MLAs had not defied the party whip. As the issue is yet to be settled the BJP unit in the state has suffered severe erosion in its strength after groups of party supporters have started deserting the party either by pledging their loyalty to the suspended legislators or by joining other political parties. If the party unit has been weakened in Jammu it does not mean that the seven MLAs ousted from the party have put on added political weight. If they won the Assembly election in 2008 they did it as senior members of the organisation that had strong roots in the region of Jammu as the offshoot of Praja Parishad. That the BJP had grown in size and strength had been established during the 2008 elections when it won 11 seats against one in 2002 poll. Yes,the success for the BJP in the 2008 poll was the result of the role the BJP and its leaders and supporters had played during the Amarnath land row but voters demonstrated their love for the party. However, the suspension of the seven MLAs has dented the party in Jammu and Kashmir. The loyalists argue that it is the party and not the individuals that matter in the BJP but they are unaware of some subtle moves of the congress and the National Conference which reveal that if the BJP high command failed to review its decision and expels all the seven MLAs the dissidents may find entry in either the Congress or the National Conference. If such a move materialised the BJP may become part of history in Jammu and Kashmir. It is an admitted fact that if the seven MLAs join either the Congress or the National Conference they are sure to lose their identity and roots because it is the history of the Congress and the National Conference in Jammu and Kashmir that new entrants are hugged at the time of entry and later discarded as untouchables. If the BJP leadership really wants to prevent the party from facing an eclipse both sides should adopt flexible attitude. It is The loyalis tstotally wrong on the part of seven MLAs to believe that the BJP is a deadwood without their support and equally wrong for the party high command to think that the party can soar to new heights with the seven MLAs thrown out of the BJP.(eom) |
