Over Rushdie tweet, AFSPA repeal demand | Sonia keeps Abdullahs away from UP election campaign | | n Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Jan 28: Omar Abdullah's stand on AFSPA and his tweet on Salman Rushdie's Jaipur visit have restrained Congress High Command to entrust electioneering to Abdullahs in Uttar Pradesh. Omar had volunteered to campaign for Congress during his meeting with Sonia Gandhi on January 5 when he completed three years in office. However, Sonia is yet to respond to his offer. According to sources in Congress Omar's stand on Salman Rushdie controversy at the Jaipur Litfest and his position of AFSPA were major irritants for the party. Omar had described Salman Rushdie's Jaipur visit a non-issue. "I don't think this is an issue that anybody should be concerned with. We are more concerned about day-to-day livelihood issues of Muslims of the country," he tweeted. NC is supporting the Congress-led UPA government at New Delhi while its state unit is its coalition partner in Jammu Kashmir. Jammu based Congress leaders have repeatedly felt embarrassed over Omar's demand for removal of AFSPA. Many brows in Congress were raised over his republic Day address. They feel Omar was hurting the image of Congress in the state. |
