'Exiled' KP writer refuses to accept state award from Omar | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Jan 28: Prominent Kashmir Pandit writer and intellectual Dr Agnishekhar has refused to accept state award conferred upon him recently by Jammu and Kashmir government under 'Best Book Category'. An appalled Dr. Agnishekhar said "we are in exile and how can I accept an award from a government which has not shown any seriousness in healing our wounds and which was responsible for exodus of my community." He made this revelation while addressing a press conference here today. "My conscience would not allow me to receive award from Chief Minister Omar Abdullah," Agnishekhar said. "I reject the Best book award carrying a cash reward of Rs. 51,000, a memento and a shawl. It was to be conferred upon me on my fourth poetry collection "Jawahar Tunnel" by Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture and Languages (JKAACL) as a mark of protest against exodus and ethnic cleansing of my peace loving community," added the Panun Kashmir leader. Dr Agnishekhar said, though this award is being given by the State Academy, and the Chief Minister of the state happens to be its President therefore, it will be unethical for me to receive this Literary Award from the hands of Omar Abdullah, the President of the Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art, culture and languages (JKAACL). Dr Agnishekhar said "I hold all the successive state governments responsible for continued policy of neglect and apathy towards the victims of Jehadi terrorism in the valley. It is my responsibility as a writer to register my protest against this worst ever forced exodus and holocaust." Reacting to one of the question on why he is refusing to accept the award from the hands of Chief Minister, Dr Agnishekhar said, "I refuse to accept this award from Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who is seen, inclined towards fundamentalists who have rejected secularism and cultural co-existence in the valley. It is unfortunate that the Chief Minister did nothing to undo the change of nomenclature and illegal encroachments of several ancient religious-cultural centres of exiled Kashmiri Pandits in the valley. Agnishekhar said "Omar even shows his unconcern over distortion of history and cultural identity of the Kashmir valley. I also register my strong protest against often repeated and recent biased and insensitive outbursts of Omar Abdullah in the national media against my exiled people", he added. |
