Early Times Report

SRINAGAR, Jan 29: Working on reports and complaints that the state-owned Alpine Hut of Jammu & Kashmir Tourism Development Corporation (JKTDC) at Tangmarg was being used for gambling by notorious counter-insurgents and their associates, Baramulla Police today conducted a surprise raid and caught a group of 12 gamblers red-handed.
SP Baramulla, Dr Haseeb Mughal, told Early Times that residents of Tangmarg had conveyed their resentment and complained a number of times that Alpine Hut of JKTD had been converted by its custodians into a gambling centre. According to these complaints, JKTD employees had been allotting the room in the name of one person but allowing nearly a dozen persons to sit, sleep and dine their and also enjoy gambling. The employees had been charging particular amounts of money which the gamblers had been paying them regularly.
SP Baramulla said that on his instructions, SHO Tangmarg and SDPO concerned conducted raids on the same hut several times but they could not arrest any of the gamblers. It appeared that information of the Police action had been reaching the gamblers and they had been comfortably escaping.
On receiving specific information that a dozen-odd gamblers were in action, while enjoying cuisine and tea, SP Baramulla sent his personal escort all the way from Baramulla in a privately hired Tata Sumo. Entire group of the twelve gamblers was caught red handed. Cash worth Rs 74, 480, eleven mobile phones and one Santro car were seized from the gamblers. SP Baramulla said that SHO and SDPO joined the operation thereafter and the detained gamblers under sustained questioning to uncover as to how they had been carrying out the unlawful activity in a government hut and who else were involved in the offence.
Dr Mughal said that the JKTDC officials made good their escape but Police were looking for them as FIR had been registered again both, gamblers as well as their facilitators, at Police Station Tangmarg. He said that the JKTDC employees had provided all necessary facilities, including heating systems, for the gamblers. Those rounded up on the spot included one-time notorious counter-insurgent and SOG sources, Shabir Kala of Hazratbal.
