Saw-mill owner held in timber "smuggling" case, Police baton-charges supporters | | | Early Times Report JAMMU/ SAMBA, Jan 29: A strong protest notwithstanding, police today arrested a sawmill owner in Samba town in an alleged timber smuggling case and baton-charged his supporters after they tried to block the national highway. About a dozen youth sustained minor bruises in the police action. Tension, however, gripped Samba town after the incident. A truck-load of illegally felled timber and firewood was late last night seized by police from the sawmill of Bhanu Pratap Singh alias Binni, who is president of Youth Federation, Samba, in the town. Binni, who was inside the sawmill at the time of police raid, initially resisted the police move to seize the truck and also made an abortive bid to set it ablaze by sprinkling kerosene oil on it. But when more cops arrived there, he fled the scene along with the truck driver and went underground to avoid arrest. He, however, again came to the sawmill this morning and started contacting his supporters. Sensing trouble, authorities had already deployed a large number of police personnel in the town. When he arrived on the highway along with some youth of Samba town, police immediately swung into action and resorted to baton-charge. While his supporters dispersed, he was arrested by police. A case under sections 379, 353, 436, 511, 147, 341, 504 and 506 of RPC and 6/15/16 of Forest Act was registered against him at Samba police station. The truck (JK02G/3727) was also seized along with the timber. SSP (Samba) Israr Khan said a hunt was on to nab the driver and raids were being conducted at his possible hideouts. |
