Held ultra reveals 'slain LeT ultra was business partner' of various in Kishtwar | | | Asif Iqbal Naik
KISHTWAR, Jan 29: Arrested Lashkar-eTaiba (LeT) militant Nafees Munwar Khandey of Suzna Palmar is alleged to have told police that slain Pak militant and LeT commander Arif Junaid alias Abu Maaz was business partner of some shopkeepers and contractors in the town here. Maaz was resident of Gujranwala, Pakistan. He was killed in an encounter with police at Bhagwan Mohalla here on January 14, 2006. Nafees was arrested by Kishtwar police few weeks ago in connection with killing of SPO Mohammad Hanief. According to reliable sources, Nafees, during his interrogation, shared vital details about the hawala money nexus that existed in the town here between Maaz and some locals, including shopkeepers and contractors. Sources said Nafees told police that Maaz, who was a Major in Pakistani army, had allegedly given about Rs 47 lakh to some shopkeepers and contractors and taken the share of profit from them. Nafees and his accomplices, Shahnawaz alias Bilal and Mohammad Rafi, who were also wanted in the SPO's killing, allegedly collected the amount of profit from the business community members and contractors, the sources added. He was alleged to have told police the names of those, who were once business partners of Maaz. Police were likely to find out the details of the wealth accumulated by them in the past few years. A legal action could also be taken against them, sources said. Earlier also, a probe was started by police into the alleged hawala money nexus between LeT and some business community members here but it was stopped following protests that Maaz had been giving money to only one person. That person was shown by later police as their source and so, no action was taken against him. |
