Controlling forest fires: Where is AAS minister sahab | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Jan 30: While the forest fires continue to ravage the green gold of Jammu and Kashmir, the Forest department is yet to receive Advanced Alarm Systems (AAS) proposed around two years ago to install early warning system in fire prone areas. According to the sources under the Rs 3 crore project, the state government had proposed to install alarm system in different fire prone areas of Shivaliks, particularly in Jammu region. which are engulfed by fires during the dry summer season, but the file has fell prey to bureaucratic apathy. The system was to be provided by the Forest Survey of India (FSI), Dehradun, but the state government did not pursue the matter and the none of the systems were installed in the forests of the state. Sources said that the alarm systems alerts the forest personnel about the exact location of the fires which helps the authorities to take prompt steps to curb them. However sources claimed that FSL is reason for the, "FSL did not respond to our proposal, otherwise state government was very serious about the entire project", officials said. Officials said that under the plan, nearly 60 critical areas across Jammu region found prone to forest fires were identified for the installation of the alarm systems. The areas include Kathua, Rajouri, Doda and Udhampur. It is pertinent to mention here that Jammu and Kashmir government has prepared an Rs 25 crore project to prevent, control and manage fires in the Jammu region in 2007. It is pertinent to mention here that Jammu region is more prone to fire incidents than Kashmir region and fires are particularly occur during summer season. "No body in the department is showing any interest as concerns of some blue eyed boys who ravage the forests is putting obstacles in the implementation of the project", said a source. According to the official sources, the 14 wild species listed by the IUCN from Jammu and Kashmir include the famous Snow Leopard found in snow covered mountains of Ladhak, common leopard found in Jammu region and Kashmir valley, Ibex, Brown bear, Himalayan Tahr, Markhor, Serow, Hangul, Musk deer, Chiru, Tibetan Gazelle, Golden eagle, Western Tragopan and Cheer Pheasant.
