| PDP imparted credibility to democratic process: Mehbooba | | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Jan 30: Peoples Democratic Party president Mehbooba Mufti has said her party has a realistic and pragmatic vision that could transform the state into a dynamic and developed state and it has proven it credentials of ability to implement it. Addressing Zonal committees of district Budgam today at Budgam she said "the performance of her party in coalition with congress for a brief period has set new standards of governance that helped the people to distinguish between good and bad governance". Mehbooba said arrival of PDP on the scene had redefined the rules of politics in the state with the people getting for the first time an alternative to monopolistic forces. This she said had introduced elements of performance audit, political accountability and governance consciousness and no body could now take people for granted as dumb driven cattle who could be exploited on emotional insecurities and hollow slogans. "Now each elected representative has to account for his or her performance and fairy tales are not going to get votes. We have to perform to win the trust of people or perish," she said. She pointed out that the participation of PDP in election process with a solid agenda for resolution and good governance had imparted credibility to the electoral process in the state for the first time since independence though the process was yet to be fully cleansed of manipulation and 'tactical management' to make people fully realize in its efficacy as a democratic tool to safeguard their rights and change destinies. She said the previous government had brought in significant reforms in the most crucial power sector by enlisting people's cooperation and a major improvement in quality of everybody's life had occurred. "Previously every state budget would increase tax on fruit that had reached unsustainable levels by 2002, but with one stroke the PDP led government abolished it and in fact closed that option for any successor government". She said it was only in J&K that agricultural produce was taxed before 2003 whereas in rest of the world including our country farming activity is protected from any taxation. Mehbooba said the economic activity had received a major boost by the revival of tourism activity. Regretting that the present government could not build on these initiatives Mehbooba said the brunt of its inefficiency was being borne by the common man. Even the much hyped Panchayat elections and often repeated advertisement about their empowerment has become a cruel joke for the people, she said. "This government is engaged in unprecedented loot while people all left to their own fate amidst unemployment, corruption, price rise, scarcity of essentials and lack of amenities like power, roads and water," she said adding Kashmir is now having the dubious distinction of being the only place in the country hit by scarcity and hoarding which otherwise was a thing of the past. "We must be the only place faced with rationing of essentials like cooking gas and that could rate as a singular achievement of the present coalition," Mehbooba added. Apart from members of district committee, all zonal committees and town committees a large number of prominent workers attended the meeting. Senior Leaders Gh Nabi Lone Hanjura,Aga Syed Mehmood, District president Saifudin Bhat, Zonal presidents Hussamudin Masoodi, Bashir Ah Bhat Youth gerenal secretary Nazir Yatoo, Mushtaq Shamim, and Molvi Maqbool also spoke on the occasion. |
