Emphasis on high yielding & early maturing fruit varieties in J&K

JAMMU, Jan 30:In bid to increase fruit production and experiment with the cultivation of new varieties of apples, cherries, pears, nuts and figs in Jammu and Kashmir the Department of Horticulture has decided to procure plants and root stocks not only from nursery growers but also from universities and research institutions.
Official sources said that during the last 20 years plants of some apple varieties, imported from various foreign lands, had been cultivated successfully in various parts of the state. They said the experiment would be repeated and emphasis was to be laid on cultivation of high yielding varieties of apples, nuts and pears.
According to these sources, on the advice of the experts and the orchardists the Department will prefer purchasing and importing fruit plants and root stocks of those varieties that mature early. Sources explained that since weather related problems caused heavy damage to fresh fruits stress was being given on cultivation of those varieties that hav shorter maturing period than the varieties that are being grown in the state.
Experts were of the opinion that emphasis be lid on cultivating those apple and pear varieties that mature by the end of October or by the beginning of November which would save fruit getting damaged by early snowfall.
Departmental sources also said that the Government has decided to procure and purchase plants and root stocks of nearly 16 varieties of apples, including paulerred, Macona extrared, Tripe E,silken, Fuji, and eight varieties of pears including sackel Harrow, Kalle and concord.
They said as far as cherries were concerned the Department planned to procure and purchase about eight varieties including own Balaton, Hudson,Sam and Chelan. In case of Fig four varieties were to be grown. The Government plans to increase apple production from 15 lakh metric tonnes to about 20 lakh metric tonnes a year during the next five years. Besides stress was to be given on increasing production of walnut and almonds which had great potential for earning foreign exchange.
