| Trooper killed at Handwara, 2 IEDs defused at Sonwar | | | Srinagar| January 16 A trooper was killed during a bloody encounter at Handwara, while an SPO sustained injuries. Meanwhile army defused two powerful landmines at G.B. Pant hospital near G.P. Pant Hospital Sonawar today. Police sources told KNS that sleuths of 21 RR on gating a tip off laid a siege around Chanja Mulla Handwara in the wee hours during which militants holed up inside the village fired indiscriminately upon the sleuths of police and army. The militants and security forces got engaged into heavy exchange of fire which last for several hours later. A militant identified as Khalid was, according to police, injured during the encounter, but managed to flee from this dense forest area. However a trooper of 21 RR Narender Kumar bearing no: 15614788X was killed on spots, while SPO Bashir Ahmed bearing no: 221/SPO was injured and his condition is stated to be critical. Locals told KNS that the militants climbed on trees and started targeting security forces, when they tried to lay a siege around them (militants). The militants, according to locals, managed to flee from the area later. The search operations are continuing in the area. Meanwhile army during routine checking spotted one Kg landmine planted in a box on the road near G.B.Pant hospital Sonawar at around 9.15am following which bomb disposal squad was called and the land mine was got defused. Army sleuth went for second round of checking to the area and found another IED placed in a hole of a wall and this too was got defused by bomb disposal squad later. With this a major tragedy was averted in the area.
