Weather man predicts snowfall on Feb3, authorities sounded alert | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Jan 31 :Director weather office based in Srinagar has predicted snowfall starting from February 3 till February 7 in the wake western disturbances which are likely approaching towards the state. The Divisional authorities in Srinagar on Tuesday therefore, directed the field officers to take all possible measures to ensure minimum disruption of services and keep their men and machinery including joint snow control rooms in a state of readiness to meet any eventuality, due to expected snowfall from 3rd Feb to 7th Feb, official press release said. According to Lotus soman , director weather office ,western disturbances are approaching jammu and Kashmir and there is possibility of snowfall at many places in the Kashmir Division, with main activity expected on 4th and 5th February. Under the influence of this weather system, moderate to rather heavy rain/snowfall is expected to occur at most places along Banihal axis and Pirpanjal ranges of the State. Moderate snowfall is also likely in Ladakh region. There is a possibility that the surface and air transport may also be affected, he said. The divisional commissioner Asgar Samoon instructed were all Deputy Commissioners, Chief Engineers and Heads of Department not to leave their headquarters and take stock of the situation. Meanwhile 40 day -long Chillai Kalan, harshest phase of winter ended on Tuesday and 20-day long Chilla Khurd, started with freeing night and warm day on Tuesday . A meteorological department official said Srinagar recorded low of minus 5.0 degrees Celsius while day temperature rose to 9.2 degrees Celsius, some four degrees above the normal during this time of the season. Both day as well as night temperature in this summer capital had fallen sixteen year low this Chillai-e-Kalan which came to end today. Kashmir winter is divided into three parts-40-day long Chillai-e-Kalan, 20-day long 'chilai-e-khurd' and 10-day long 'chilla Bachha'. Pahalgam witnessed coldest night in entire Valley as mercury settled at minus 14.2 degrees Celsius against minus 13.2 degree Celsius yesterday, the official said. The famous health resort in south Kashmir's Anantnag district recorded maximum of 5.2 degrees Celsius, the MeT official said. Gulmarg was the second coldest place in Kashmir as it recorded a low of minus 12.5 degrees Celsius. Qazigund recorded minimum of minus 10.0 degrees Celsius against minus 9.9 degrees Celsius on previous night while it recorded maximum at 8.9 degrees Celsius. Kokernag had a minimum of minus 6.9 degree Celsius while frontier Kupwara district in north Kashmir had a low minus 6.3 degrees Celsius, the official said. Deep freeze continued in Ladakh with its capital city Leh recording a minimum of minus 23.4 degrees Celsius while neighbouring Kargil town had season's coldest night at minus 25.0 degrees Celsius, the MeT official added.
