Cong forgets Gandhi? | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Feb 1: The nation paid floral tributes to Mahatma Gandhi on Monday on his 63rd death anniversary. Several functions were also organised in Jammu to remember him and his role. One such function was organized at the JKPCC headquarters, Residency Road, Jammu. The function was to start at 11 a.m. The organisers were feeling aghast, perturbed and helpless. They were just not able to decide whether they should start the function or not. Their problem was that only "nine persons had assembled for the solemn occasion". According to an insider, "five of them were the members of the Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC), including senior vice-president Dharmpal Sharma, vice-president S Gurmukh Singh, former minister Mula Ram, Hari Singh and MLC and general secretary Ravinder Sharma. Four were the members of the Jammu District Congress Committee (Urban), including district secretary Vijay Sethi. Later on, Medical Education and Sports Minister R S Chib joined them." Convinced that such a "poor attendance would send a very wrong signal", the organizers, according to the insider, "rang up one trade union leader and requested him to bring to the venue as many members of his organization as possible, all government employees". The trade union leader brought "nearly 15 persons to the venue". It was "because of the initiative of the trade union leader -- who belongs to the Congress -- that the number of participants increased to double digit". "It was a very poor show," the insider revealed saying that "most of the JKPCC members and party workers have lost their interest in the Congress party because of the negative attitude of the Congress high command towards it" and that the "Congress high command has destroyed the party in the state to keep the Abdullah dynasty on its right side". Significantly, the insider also held the "Congress ministers responsible for the poor show" saying the "JKPCC and the DCC members and other party workers do not want to see the faces of the corrupt and opportunist Congress ministers" and added that "this was perhaps the main reason behind the poor show and virtual non-participation in the function held to mark the 63 death anniversary of Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi". The insider bemoaned saying the "Congress has virtually forgotten Mahatma Gandhi". |
