Neither acting, nor reacting | J&K BJP | | Neha JAMMU, Feb 1: Kashmiri leaders in and outside the state government have intensified their activities to put pressure on New Delhi so that it concedes their demands. Some of them have even gone to the extent of asserting that it is the people of the state, and not New Delhi, who are the chief determinants and that it is they and they alone who had the authority to decide their own political fate. It happened only the other day. Two other developments took place on the same day. One was the demand for the discussion and implementation of the report that was submitted to the Union Government by the interlocutors. The other was the criticism of the Army's stand on the AFSPA. These three developments took place on the same day. People were expecting that the local BJP leadership, which claims that theirs' is an ultra-nationalist party that stands for the unity and integrity of India, that stands for the empowerment of Jammu province, that stands for the abrogation of Article 370 and that recognises and appreciates the supreme sacrifices of the Army, would react, if not act, considering the nature of provocation these three developments caused. But nothing of this sort happened. The BJP neither acted nor reacted, thus once again indicating its indifference towards those working not only against the legitimate interests of the people of Jammu province but also the country. The local BJP leadership is, it appears, incapable of understanding the implications of the Kashmiri leadership's formulations on the state. Had it not been so, the local BJP leadership would have surely reacted, if not acted. Or, should one conclude that the local BJP leadership is hand-in-glove with the Kashmiri leadership and it shares the views of the Kashmiri leadership? It is for the BJP leadership to clarify why have they stopped acting or reacting. The sooner it clarifies, the better it would be for the party. Otherwise, the people of Jammu province would dub the local BJP leaders as the agents of the Kashmiri leadership, as they describe the Jammu-based Congress, NC and similar other leaders as the representatives of the Kashmiri leadership in this region. One can understand that the local BJP leadership is passing through a very critical phase. One can also understand that there is infighting in the party. But one fails to understand why those at the helm are not making their presence felt by making right noises at right time. It is this that has created serious doubts even in the minds of the ardent supporters of the BJP. |
