Roof ‘constructed’ 5 times in 7 years! | Radio Jammu's studio complex turns out to be money minting building; high level team arriving | | Sanjeev Sharma JAMMU, Feb 1: The studio complex of the Radio Kashmir Jammu (RKJ) has turned out to be a money minting building for certain employees of All India Radio (AIR) who renovate and repair it every year both on papers and otherwise to draw huge bills and cause heavy loss to the Government exchequer. In an apparent nexus among some employees of AIR Jammu, its Civil Construction Wing (CCW) and favourite contractors, the roof top of the studio complex of the prestigious Radio Jammu here, has been so far either repaired or re- constructed five times during the past seven years on the pretext that the complex was leaking and needed `` immediate'' treatment. Informed sources in the CCW of AIR Jammu told the Early Times that the studio complex, comprising seven huge studios and a control room, was again being repaired this financial year, unmindful of the fact that lakhs of rupees were spent on its construction only a year ago. The sources said a fresh proposal worth lakhs of rupees was put forth this year by some employees of the AIR to again lay the lintel for the entire building after removing the old slab which had started leaking soon after the money was released and work done certificate granted in favour of a contractor who happens to be the relative of an official working in AIR's CCW wing and had used sub-standard material in its construction. The same contractor has again been hired this year also, for ulterior motives, by the officials at the helm of affairs, the sources said. They pointed out that through other agency the studio complex and its two duty rooms were refurbished only in May 2011 and again in December 2011 under ``minor works head''. However, due to the recent rains in the beginning of January 2012, the complex alarmingly stated signs of deterioration and degeneration, forcing the higher officials in the office of the Directorate General AIR New Delhi to initiate a secret departmental enquiry to know the reasons and circumstances as to why the roof top was leaking every year and needed repairs. The sources said the Director General AIR, Mr L D Mandloi along with three Chief Engineers and other dignitaries is arriving here on February seven or eight to inspect the studio building and also to find out the reason for its frequent leakage. The sources said the team was likely to fix the responsibility. Director Radio Kashmir Jammu, Mr V P Yadav, when contacted, in an apparent bid to evade certain queries, said ``It was not yet clear when or whether the DG AIR will be arriving here''. He wanted that the same could be confirmed from Programme Head, Mr Ravi Magotra. On being inquired, Mr Magotra said, "I am linked with programmes, so I don't know much about team's arrival, but it is certain that some body is coming to inspect construction at studio." Meanwhile, smelling a huge misappropriation and dereliction of duty on part of certain officials, sources said some conscious RTI activists have also filed applications seeking information to know the truth about the facts and figures pertaining to reconstruction and refurbishing of roof top of the studio complex of Radio Kashmir Jammu, besides information about money spent and involvement of agencies and officials in the scam. When contacted, some of the Engineering and CCW employees pleading anonymity, confirmed that the roof building of the studio complex of Radio Kashmir Jammu was either reconstructed or repaired five times in last seven years. The employees have impressed upon DG AIR to initiate a thorough probe by handing over the case to the concerned investigating agencies. |
