`Omar must distance himself from Syed' | Restoring teachers' dignity by abusing examinations! | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Feb 1: The Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah today expressed his desire to restore the dignity of teachers. He was addressing a state level teachers' convention at Zorawar Singh Auditorium. He was flanked by education Minister, Peerzada Muhammad Sayed and trade union leaders. Interestingly the Chief Minister constituted Crime Branch probe to ascertain `misuse of official position' by Peerzada to help his son qualify the matriculation examination held in 2009. A local daily published the irregularity Sunday. Taking strong note of the report, the Chief Minister ordered the Crime Branch to probe the allegations. The Crime Branch raided the Board of School education (BOSE) office Tuesday and seized records relevant to the Peerzada's son. Senior officials were also questioned. The report evoked scornful reaction from the civil society and the student community. A government teacher, Riyaz Ahmad while talking to Early Times said: "How can a person who abused the examination process by helping his son restore honor of the teachers. He has insulted the teachers." Rubbing shoulders with a tainted minister has won Chief Minister severe criticism. "After ordering a probe against Peerzada, the Chief Minister should not have rubbed shoulders with him", said Zoheb, a student. Ironically Omar also stressed need for making education free from political and other influences. Was he referring to Peerzada Muhammad Sayed? The Chief Minister, educationists believe, must bear in mind that the honour and dignity of the teachers can be restored by respecting merit. "It can never be restored by shielding a person who has been found abusing the sanctity of examinations", they opined. The scandal has caused a stir in the Congress party. According to insiders, he (Peerzada) continues to hold office because of his close proximity with the party high command. |
