Alarming 400 per cent increase in unemployment in J&K | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Feb 1: There has been 440 per cent increase in the unemployment in Jammu and Kashmir in past four years. This shocking data has been complied by the latest Economic Survey. Survey said that 2006 there were 1, 093, 83 lakh registered job seekers in the state and the number has now reached to 5, 90,661 (2010 ending November). It has revealed that 70 per cent of the population is directly or indirectly dependent on agriculture and allied activities which continue to be a subsistence sector. Report says that the number of job seekers witnessed decline of 4.87 per cent in 2008 in comparison to the registration figures of 2007". However the report says that number of unemployed could be higher than what actually are registered with the Employment Exchanges. "The statistics of employment exchanges does not provide accurate picture of unemployment. Data suffers mainly from two defects as on the one hand all the unemployed persons do not register themselves while and on the other hand some of the registered persons may not actually be unemployed but only in search of better jobs", says the report. Economic survey has revealed that the population of Jammu and Kashmir has almost doubled in past 30-years. While it was 59.87 lakhs in 1981 now it has reached to 101.44 lakh as per the 2001 census. The number of workers also registered an increase of 39 per cent during the same period. According to 2001 census, the number of total workers stands at 37.54 lakh of which the main workers constitute 26.9 lakh and the number of marginal workers constitutes 11.45 lakh". Survey says that the share of main and marginal workers in the total work force has remained nearly constant during the last two censuses (1981 and 2001). Further classification of workers shows that 42.4 per cent of the total workers are cultivators, 6.56 per cent are agricultural labourers and the remaining 51.04 per cent are workers engaged in other activities including household industries. Female workers constitute 28.61 per cent of the total workforce. Survey has also shown concern that the process of placements which was made through employment exchanges has vanished altogether as a result of which there has been decrease in the registration level at these centers.
