Men in Khaki: The legitimate land encroachers
1/16/2007 11:40:41 PM
JAMMU | JAN 16
“The Tawi Flyover” has become a death trap for the vehicle operators driving on the flyover, which connects the old city with the outer localities of the winter capital. The vehicles operators on this fly over are taken aback when all of a sudden barricades emerge on the road obstructed by two parallel poles of Central Reserve Police (CRPF) on both sides of roads at a walking distance near St. Peters School and MA Stadium. These posts of the CRPF have covered more than half of the way by placing heavy stones, making it difficult for free flow of vehicular movement.
The flyover network in Jammu, which was a cherished dream of former Governor of J&K Jagmohan to lessen the traffic chaos, has been dashed by the CRPF, as the flyover has become more vulnerable for accidents.
These encroachers seem too scared of their own security as they are overlooking the threat perception on the ground by under looking death perception on the flyover and the barricades have many a times resulted into turtling of the vehicles.
Moreover the CRPF trucks standing there “as Mobile Kitchens” for hours together serving day and night meals to the jawans on duty is also a cause of concern. As in the galloping dark where most of the Power Development Department light posts stand lifeless making these mobile kitchens vulnerable to any accident since they stand without indicators and headlight warning signals.
To reduce fatalities on the Flyover and to facilitate free and frequent traffic movement, administration must take notice of the spot where Jammuites are being befooled in the name of security.
The people ask what was the purpose of constructing this flyover involving crores of rupees if unnecessary barricades are put to restrict the smooth flow of traffic. They feel no body has guts to ask the encroachers to remove the barricades and rightly say that ‘Might is Right’.
